Cannot set up new email account in Mail

I just setup a new MacBook Pro using El Capitan. I'm having trouble setting up my email account in Mail. I set up the account yesterday but today it won't log on. After several attempts at connecting today I deleted the account and tried to re-add the account.

When I click the "+" sign to begin setting up the account I'm asked to enter my Name, email address, Password and then click "continue". When I do it I get the message: "unable to verify account name or password".

I went online to my email provider's "webmail" and am able to log in there with no problems so I must be using the correct password to try to set-up the account in Mail. I've checked the email address and it too is typed correctly. I am using the correct "Name" as it is set-up with my email provider. I went to the provider's set-up instructions for Apple's Mail and I seem to be doing it correctly.

What's peculiar is that yesterday I also set-up another email account thru a different email provider and am having no trouble with it.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks, Tony

Hi Glenn

I'm sorry to bother you again but I still have no luck setting up the Mail account for my Suddenlink email.

Here's what I've done this morning.

  1. Followed your suggestion and went to Keychain items, highlighted each one and read the description. Only 1 item was for Mail and that was the other account which I have set up and is working fine, albeit thru another email provider.
  2. Also as you suggested, I created a temporary user then logged out as myself and back in as the temp user. Tried setting up the account with Suddenlink there but again got the same error message as always.
  3. I have an ATT.net account I don't use and it was not set-up in Mail so I attempted to set-up that account thru the temp user and IT WORKED! Sent and received some miscellaneous emails in the ATT account.
  4. Next, thru the temp user and in Firefox, I went online to my Suddenlink Webmail and was able to log in so I know I am using the correct credentials to log in.
  5. While online, I changed passwords at Suddenlink, logged out and logged back in with new password with success.
  6. So, I logged out of temp user and back in as myself, attempted to set-up the Suddenlink account in Mail using my new password and zilch! I am having no probs logging into the Suddenlink account thru my phone or my MacPro.

IF the problem IS El Capitan, how can I revert to the previous Mac OS...or...can I even do that?

No one else here in Apple Discussions is experiencing this problem and surely someone else "out there" is using Mac Mail with El Capitan. Funny thing is, I had the Suddenlink account set-up on Tuesday and it worked fine. On Wednesday morning when I launched Mail it then gave me the message that it couldn't receive mail, but I WAS able to send emails because I sent myself a test message to one of my other email addresses and it came thru so the SMTP part was working.

I'm totally baffled. Again, so sorry to rely on you for this much trouble and thanks for your patience.

Open Internet Accounts in System Preferences and make sure the account doesn't exist there. If it does, delete it and then add the new account. If it doesn't work by selecting the provider (like Yahoo), then choose Other Account and try that.

Rejection usually means that something is wrong in the information. Be careful to make sure each letter is exact as well as symbols and periods. Also do not add any extra spaces as that will also cause a failure.

You might also check with your provider to make sure they are compatible with El Capitan.

You can try opening you KeyChain app in the Utilities folder and look for passwords for that account. Delete all you find and try again to set up the account.

If the account setup fails because of wrong information in one or more fields, another setup window should open with a more advanced setup. Try going through the info there and make sure all information such as server information is correct.

You can try creating a new user on the computer for testing purposes. After creating a test user, log into it and try creating the email account there. That will tell you if there is a problem with your user account.

Since you can set up other accounts with no problem and it does the same in the test user account, then the problem is either Suddenlink, wrong information, or non compatiblility with El Capitan. It doesn't appear to be a problem with the Mail application or KeyChain. Since it fails at the first screen which tells you that it doesn't recognize your user name, password or name as being correct, that would tend to mean that something isn't typed right or Suddenlink has a problem.

You also say it worked one day, and failed the next. That usually indicates a problem with the provider in many cases.

If you have access to another Mac, try adding the account there. You might also try with a hard wire connection to the internet instead of wireless.

Other things you might consider is to go to the webmail site and go to account settings. Look for security features that may be blocking access to that device.

I have a feeling that even if you if you reverted back to the previous Mac OS, you would still have problems. But if you have a TM backup, you can restore it from a previous date. Other than that, you would have to reinstall a previous OS from scratch. If you are referring to an earlier version of El Capitan, you would have to have a copy of the installer before the latest update.

Sorry I just can't think of anything else to tell you. I believe what you say about typing everything correctly. But since you can add other accounts with no problem and you said it worked one day, I can only assume it's something with Suddenlink. All providers will work fine at the webmail site, but it appears that some providers just have problems with Apple or some mail applications.
