Q: Not getting notifications on watch

Multiple resets. Unpairing. Updated OS. Phone factory reset. New watch. Same problems. Will initially get notifications but after the first three or so I stop getting notified on my watch.

    Hi

How notifications behave depends on the status of your devices. In order to bring notifications to your attention as soon as possible:

    - If your iPhone is unlocked, you will receive notifications on your iPhone instead of on your watch.

    - If your iPhone is locked or asleep and your watch is unlocked (regardless of whether the watch screen is asleep or awake) and on your wrist, you will receive notifications on your watch.

    - If your watch is locked or has Do Not Disturb enabled, notifications will go to your iPhone.

If you have a passcode on watch, you wont receive notifications.  I had same problem and the "Genius Bar" said it was a conflict with other apps on my phone so i reset phone and watch and someone told me to remove passcode and it has worked perfectly since.

I have exactly the same issue.

After 3 initial notifications, everything stopped functioning.

I know my phone must be locked to receive messages on my watch.

I know my watch should be unlocked (I have no code on it)

I know the settings on the watch should have notification enabled.

I reviewed all settings regarding notifications a hundred times by now and yup.... should work.... but doesn't.

Rebooted phone & watch couple of times, disconnected & reconnected watch ....

    Nothing helps.

Just haven't requested a new watch yet....

My phone is a iPhone SE and is up to date.

This is not the Apple experience I am used to.

AND notifications are the prime reason to purchase the watch imo.

There must be something else, apart from the obvious blocking reasons.

Hello everyone, i have had this problem too, I've even had the watch replaced.

When this first started for me, they said it was my tattoo that i have on my arm, however this watch perfectly even with a passcode on it for the first 6-8 months roughly, then they did the first IOS update and the watch has never worked the same since.

Like other people i am not used to this experience from apple and feel very disappointed about this product

Every time i try to get this sorted I've been told loads of different things, some that ever conflicting what the other apple guys are saying! I have found this whole experience very confusing!

I have reset both the watch and phone at least 20 times, the apple store have even reset both.

The watch still doesn't work as it should!

I am even going to try reset both again but not have a passcode and see if this works!

Please if there is any other advice you can offer i would greatful, sadly my watch was very expensive and i feel its wasted nearly £900 which will not refund?

    When using the following settings:

    - On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > General > Wrist Detection - turn on.

    - On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Passcode > Turn Passcode on.

    - Also on the Passcode settings screen, enable Unlock with iPhone.

After putting it on your wrist, your watch should then unlock after whatever you do first: either unlocking your watch manually (by entering the passcode) or unlocking your iPhone.

It should then remain unlocked (including when the screen is asleep) until you remove it from your wrist. When you remove your watch, it should lock automatically.

If the watch does not behave as expected, check that you are wearing it sufficiently snugly. If worn too loosely, your watch may believe that it has been removed from your wrist. With passcode also enabled, it would then lock automatically. Sensor performance can also be affected by temporary or permanent changes to your skin, such as some wrist tattoos.

If the issue persists - including after restarting both devices and unpairing and re-pairing your watch - then I suggest that you contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available) or make a Genius Bar reservation with a view to having your watch checked (under warranty, if eligible):

To check your warranty status (the serial number is on the back of your watch):

I Think the update was my issue as wel. Have you removed the passcode from the watch?

Hello, Thank you for your advance.

Sadly none of this has worked.

So the other after coming on here and reading what you all had to say, i decided to try once more!

So reset both devices again, took of the passcode and then found i couldn't use the apple pay, grrrr but the watch was performing as expected. So put passcode back on, watch still performing as expected. This lasted for two days or three days

So got up this morning, put my watch on and now its not performing as expected, passcode always wanting to be put in while on wrist, notifications not coming through again!

Sadly i have no idea why it keeps doing this and neither do the apple store, really not sure what more i can do :-(

Your issue may be caused by your tattoo, if this lies beneath your watch:

If you do not have a tattoo on your other wrist, perhaps test by wearing your watch on that wrist, to see whether the issue still occurs there.

To adjust the display settings for wearing your watch on your other wrist:

    • On your iPhone in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > General > Watch Orientation - select the other wrist and choose your preferred Digital Crown setting.

To change bands over (if you also wish to switch your band around when changing the orientation of your watch):

The watch worked perfectly for 6-8 months when i first got the watch, my tattoo has been there for 10 years now. This issue only started when apple sent the first watch update through.

I appreciate that the watch worked as expected for a long period of time.

However, in order to help identify whether the watch has a hardware issue, I suggest that you try wearing it on your other wrist, if you do not also have a tattoo there.

Then it seems that - given how Wrist Detection currently works - the ink, pattern and/or saturation of the tattoo on your other wrist was the cause of your issue.
