Macbook pro 8,1 late not booting after SMC flash via rEFIt

Dear all,

To be synthetic:

I had kernel_task running over 300% with my HDD WD Blue

I replaced it with a SSD and the problem was still here...

I looked up into settings and found that i didn"t had the correct SMC and EFI version: see below:

Nom du modèle : MacBook Pro

Identifiant du modèle : MacBookPro8,1

Nom du processeur : Intel Core i5

Vitesse du processeur : 2,4 GHz

Nombre de processeurs : 1

Nombre total de cœurs : 2

Cache de niveau 2 (par cœur) : 256 Ko

Cache de niveau 3 : 3 Mo

Mémoire : 4 Go

Version de la ROM de démarrage : MBP81.0047.B2C

Version SMC (système) : 1.68f99

As you can see i dont have the correct SMC installed, and have an unknow EFI ... 😮 I dont know how i have the wrong SMC and EFI ..

I tried to install the correct SMC and EFI from el capitan but it said that i needed 10.9.5 version, so i moved on and downgraded to mavericks and when i tried to install i got a message that i can't upgrade the version ... (or it was not needed )

I tried to flash the SMC with rEFIt and it has succeed:

I used the 201MBP13.smc which is located on the .pkg of the MBP late 2011 update here:

Ofc i have a blackscreen so can't do anything..

Tried SMC, PRAM reset, nothing

Now when i'm booting, the fans starting at full speed 10 second after the boot, then turns about 6-7 seconds and then the mbp shut down ..

The mbp is out of waranty

Thanks for the help!

1. Can you mount the EFI volume in Single user mode and check the available files?

2. From How to identify MacBook Pro models - Apple Support, there are two 8,1 MBPs, not one.

3. The download link you used seems to be incorrect. From About EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Mac computers - Apple Support, the link is Mac EFI Security Update 2015-001 which has the System requirements as

Post Date: Jun 30, 2015

File Size: 105.4 MB

System Requirements

  • OS X 10.8.5
  • OS X 10.9.5

The French version of this update is at Mac EFI Security Update 2015-001 .

but from your link - MÀJ du programme interne de la SMC du MacBook Pro 1.5 , it is dated

4. You have the incorrect SMC firmware applied. You will need to find an Apple Genius Bar, or the correct firmware and apply it yourself.

Hi 🙂

My mbp is not booting, fans running in high speed only, and comp turns off couples seconds after that..

I have :

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011)

MacBookPro8,1

MD313xx/A

A1278

13.3"/2.4 i5/2x2GB/500-5400

So, i cant do anything, i tried PRAM, SMC reset, also cmd V (for verbose) cmd R (for internet recovery), nothing works..

I used this tutorial: MacBook Pro 15" Late 2011, How-to Downgrade SMC 1.69f4 --> 1.69f3

And it looks like bricked.

If i go to a genius bar, will they be able to apply the correct firmware? And will it be free as the macbook is out of warranty?

Can you boot the Mac in Target Disk Mode - Share files between two computers with target disk mode - Apple Support ? If yes, and you have a second Mac, try to connect it.

If you still have your old HDD, it has the older firmware in EFI partition, replace the SSD with HDD, and try SMC/NVRAM Reset and test if the Mac will boot.

I do not know if there is a cost involved. If you get a nice person at the Genius Bar, he may be willing to help you without any financial implications.

Looks like the Target mode its not working.. (mbp rebooting after holding T then fans runs at full speed..)

So i went to an Apple Store (Paris - opera), they were out of place, and advice me to go to an Apple resseller (iCare) who was beside the Apple Store. The resseler gave me a quotation to change the motherboard for 657€ 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎 (Its an April fool no? 😝) I told them that i had an incorrect firmware installed but didnt pay attention... I'll get back my macbook and try the Apple Store, i have an appointement at Apple Store next Thursday to check the macbook pro at Genius Bar.

Should i buy a bus pirate and try with flashroom anyway?
