Q: Can no longer search apple Mail

My Apple Mail database was corrupted and had to be rebuilt by the application before it would reopen. My mail is back in the application, but I can no longer search for any email.  The results turn up blank. Will my email be re-indexed over time, like Spotlight does, allowing me to search for email?  Or, have I lost the ability to search for email in this application?  Thanks.
