What does the nano-SIM card do on an iPad Mini 2?

The nano-SIM allows you to connect to a cellular data network should you choose to purchase a cellular data plan for your iPad.

Of course, your iPad is not a cellular telephone, and cannot make or receive cellular telephone calls or SMS messages whether you use the nano-SIM or not.
