Q: how do I delete TotalVPN pop up?

Recently, there is an pop up that appears to my desktop. Even though I didn't open Safari, it also appears.

I tried to check and block plug-in and pop up on the Safari Preference, but it doesn't work.

This is the Ads that appear every time that I open my laptop.

    Try Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac:

    https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/mac/

Or you can try the Apple alternative:

    Ciao.

First, never use any kind of "anti-virus" or "anti-malware" software on a Mac. That's how you cause problems, not how you solve them.

You installed a fake "utility" called "Advanced Mac Cleaner." Like any software that purports to automatically "clean up" or "speed up" a Mac, it's a scam, and some or all variants of it are ad-injection malware.

To remove it, please take the steps below. Some of the files listed may be absent in your case. Back up all data before proceeding.

Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. This procedure works as of now, as far as I know. It may not work in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for a more recent discussion, or start a new one.

If you paid for the software with a credit card, consider reporting the charge to the bank as fraudulent.

    Step 1

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    ~/Library/LaunchAgents

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

              Services Open

from the contextual menu.* A folder named "LaunchAgents" may open. If it does, look inside it for files with a name that begins like this:

              com.pcv.

Move any such file to the Trash.

Log out or restart the computer and empty the Trash.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select

              Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You may not see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

    Step 2

The malware is now permanently inactivated, as long as you don't reinstall it. This step is optional.

Delete the following items, if they exist, as in Step 1:

    /Library/Application Support/amc
    ~/Library/AdvancedMacCleaner

There's no need to log out or restart after taking this step.

The problem may have started when you downloaded something, such as the application "FileZilla," from the "Sourceforge" website or some other Internet cesspit. Never visit that site again. All legitimate software should be downloaded directly from the developer's website or from the Mac App Store, if applicable.

"Advanced Mac Cleaner" may have been bundled with other malware that was installed at the same time. If you still have problems with web browsers after removing it, ask for instructions.

Do not be dissuaded from using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac no matter who tries to tell you otherwise.   They probably do not understand the nature of the application and what it actually does.

    https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/mac/

Be advised that Malwarebytes Anti Malware for Mac is recommended for use by Apple telephone support personnel.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac is safe to use and there are no proven instances of it harming any Mac.

Be advised that Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac is used by Apple genius bar technicians in lieu of the Apple instructions for removing adware/malware because it faster, simpler and more comprehensive.

One final thing though. I've also followed Oleglthorpe's advice and used Malwarebytes - its free after all - and it found and removed a further four bits of malware/adware that I didn't know were there.

So thanks again Linc for the advice on removing TotalVPN and also Ogelthorpe for pointing me in the direction of Malwarebytes. I take Linc's point that Malwarebytes may not be able to do everything. But, as I said, its free and so easy to use that a novice like me might as well use it too.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac does one thing and only one thing:  It searches for and identifies known adware/malware on a Mac.  After it has finished the search, it is up to the user to make the decision whether to delete any items found or not.

It is not 'protection' software and has never been presented as such by the developer.  Should anyone impart any other attributes or suggest that is is an AV application, he does so out of error or lack of knowledge of what the Malwarebytes Ant-Malware for Mac is and does.

    Ciao.

Thank you Pandara. I've removed it and now waiting to see if it won't popup again. This is after I tried to chat and get help removing it from the totalvpn .... They gave me the wrong instructions and asked for a screenshot. But the pop-up was not popping

always just sometimes.... I told them it is an illegal act to hack my computer... So, thanks again and  I hope it'll work.

A link has been posted to the website of the "Advanced Mac Cleaner" adware attacker. Do not follow that link. It's no more to be trusted than the adware itself. Just remove the adware and never install anything like it again. Always assume that any product advertised by means of adware is a scam.

    Hi Linc,

I'm assuming you are referring to my post of earlier. I see its been removed, I was genuinally trying to help and genuinally am a Product Manager at TotalVPN. We made a mistake working with Advanced Mac Cleaner and I'm trying to clear our name proactively. We really do not want to be associated with scareware. Would it be okay for me to re-post the link?

No, it wouldn't. Links to the website of a malware attacker don't belong here, or anywhere. Instructions for removing the malware have already been posted, and that's all anyone needs to know about it.

Okay, sorry to have posted it. I have been working with our support team all week as this issue has come up and encountered users who are uncomfortable using terminal and hence have been providing them a removal tool.
