Sleep wake fail

Hi,

I’ve been getting Sleep Wake Failure, repeated and intermittent for 8+ weeks. When it happens the display remains black after I open the lid of my MBP and the login dialogue does not appear, however long I wait. My only option then is forcing shutdown by holding the power key and then to restart from cold. Frustrating and time-consuming.

Invoking sleep is mostly via pressing Cmd+Option+Eject, sometimes via Ctrl+Eject, and very rarely just by closing the lid. Failing to wake from sleep is intermittent. Sometimes it wakes fine from sleep & works for days on end without a problem. Other times, there’s no waking it without forcing shutdown first. It doesn't seem to matter what applications are active, how long since the last shutdown, whether power source is power adaptor or battery, battery charge %, etc. There's no pattern I can see in terms of my usage or the time of day.

I've now boosted the Computer Sleep and Display Sleep settings in the Energy Saver system preferences to prevent sleep if I even go to get coffee: not good for the planet or my hardware, I know. Both 'put hard disks to sleep when possible' and 'wake for network access' are checked. No start up/wake or sleep times are scheduled. Battery health is fine, battery condition is reported as 'normal'.

I’ve already done PRAM/NVRAM reset and SMC reset several times. No joy. I'd really welcome suggestions from forum members. My thanks in advance.

Hello Coola Boola,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I see that your MacBook Pro isn't waking from sleep as expected. The following support article should provide you some things to try.

Specifically:

If your Mac doesn't wake when you expect

Your Mac might pause a few seconds before it wakes up. If it doesn't seem to wake at all, check for these possibilities:

  • Your screen brightness might be turned down.
  • If you're using an external display, your display might be turned off.
  • Your Mac might be in safe sleep. To wake from safe sleep, press the power button.
  • Check for a sleep indicator light, if applicable, and make sure that your Mac isn't turned off.

and

If the previous steps don't work

These additional steps may help identify or resolve the issue:

  • Reset the SMC.
  • Reset NVRAM.
  • Disconnect external devices other than your Apple keyboard, mouse, and display. If that resolves the issue, gradually reconnect your devices, testing each time, until you find the device that is interfering with sleep. Then check the documentation that came with the device, or contact the device manufacturer.
  • Start up in Safe Mode to see if the issue is related to non-Apple startup items, login items, or kernel extensions.
  • Try to isolate the issue by using another user account.
