Q: mackintosh HD is full, how can I free up space

I have a macbook pro (retina, 13 inch mid 2014) and the HD is full - the majority is full with "other" (what ever that means) and then movies is the next biggest...can I delete movies to free up space and how to do this and also why would movies take up so much room - I have 11 in iTunes.  But the storage also says that I have 6.8 MB free of 249.78 G...the problem is that I use Dropbox a lot to go between computer to keep my files updated and now drop box can't sync because I have no space left...

I am running OS X El Capitan version 10.11.4 processor is 2.6 GHz intel core i5, Memory is 8 GB

thanks so much

Zoe
