When using the Smart Keyboard on a flat surface (like a table), is it normal that the keyboard is lifting off the surface of the table due to the weight of the iPad Pro?

I recently purchased a 12.9" iPad Pro with a Smart Keyboard case. When I use the iPad Pro on a flat surface with the keyboard open and connected, the weight of the iPad Pro lifts the keyboard off of the table unless my hands are on it. Is this normal behavior? Is there some sort of break-in period before it lays flat as depicted in the product photos on Apple.com?

Thanks in advance for any input anyone has—just trying to decide whether or not this is a defective unit or if the product just inherently has a quirk.

I do not think that it is normal. Here is my experience:

I have purchased a nice iPad Pro in Germany, along with its apple keyboard.

At the same day of the purchase, in the apple store I noticed that when the the keyboard was fitted, it did not lie flat on the table surface.

It was told to me that it was because the keyboard is new and the problem would have been solved in few days.

After few months of use, the problem was still there.

I moved in Singapore, where the defect was recognized as such.

They gave me a new keyboard and guess what? It was also defective (same problem).

I managed to convince them to give me another one keyboard and this time it was ok.

Therefore to me it is not normal that the keyboard does not lie flat on the table: my third keyboard was ok immediately after the unbox, not the same for the first 2.

I am wondering now, how many defective keyboards are on the market?

How many will adjust itself and how many not?

Just be carefull when you buy the iPad keyboard. Good luck.

I have exactly the same problem. Bought an iPad Pro 10.5 with pencil and Smart keyboard mid June.

I contacted Apple Support this morning, but man, what a disaster!

The guy treated me as if it was my fault that Apple sent me a faulty product and wasn't helpful at all. He wanted me to make an appointment in the Brussels store, drive to Brussels (over 1 hour drive) and then 'perhaps they will take it in for repair or replace it'.

I expected Apple to send me a new keyboard and I would then send back the faulty one.

I have been using a huge amount of Apple products over many years and gave them a lot of money. (started with the LC in the early 1990's). One would expect to be treated differently, given the high prices.

It appears to be an issue with a bad assembly, if you see the ones on internet, all of them have a little gap between the last flap of the keyboard and the followin one, at least on mine that gap os not present, causing the two flaps to overlap, and cause the ipad to have a bump when on a flat surface, this makes the weight of the ipad sufficient to lift the keyboard, and gives and awful feeling when attempting to type on it.

I Use my keyboard on all kinds of surfaces and have not seen this problem unless the surface is not a hard surface (i.e. A desk, table, etc...). To solve the problem I use the box my Apple Smart Keyboard came in with some shelf liner I bought at Lowe's Hadware, the kind that is sticky (although not to the touch of skin) to keep a hard surface under it while folded for use of the keyboard. Now, even if I am laying in bed like I am ATM or in the car, or anywhere, I am able to use my new iPad Pro and it's Smart Keyboard all the time. Be careful to not buy an off brand accessory, especially when something new comes out to avoid knock-offs problems with design and the end result to the purchaser.

It shouldn't be like that, especially for such an expensive product. I just bought the keyboard for the iPad Pro 9.7" and the keyboard lifting up is driving me crazy. I've looked at the keyboards in several Apple Stores and none of them had this problem. I can't seem to get any help from the Apple site so I'm going to return it to the Apple Store and see if they will replace it.
