I rented the movie on my macbook - through the iTunes store. And now I can't find it available. All the instructions recommend I download the movie before we leave home, but I can't find a way to download the movie. Hmmm...

Note this: If you rented the movie on your iOS device or Apple TV, you can’t move it to any other device.
This not helpful? our TV broke down. surely we can log in to iTunes and watch rented movie on macbook or iPad? or have we just donated $5.99 to apple? 30 years ago we had VHS - it worked better, and didn't require buffering!!! and it was possible to eject the tape and play on another machine.
Thanks?
You may not think it's helpful but the answer was correct. A rental is not a purchase and thus not available in the cloud. The only other way would be if rented on IOS or computer as it is then possible to AirPlay. If there is buffering then that is due to your network. There is a big difference between viewing physical media and streaming and the licensing involved.

If you rented on your MacBook then it would download and would reside on your computer until expiry. If you are having an issue then you will need to elaborate
