Q: A recent widespread hack of vulnerable OSX devices has resulted in multiple virus infections on your device. A full system scan is now required to find and remove harmful files or applications from your OS X device.
I just received this msg on my computer.
"A recent widespread hack of vulnerable OSX devices has resulted in multiple virus infections on your device. A full system scan is now required to find and remove harmful files or applications from your OS X device."
It wants me to begin a scan now!
Is this a valid message? I don't want to do anything until I know if it's really from Apple or not.
Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

No, it's not. If you're using Safari, choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, close it, and then launch it with the Shift key held down; if the message reappears, disconnect the computer from the Internet and close the tab the popup came from.
