Q: Outlook Mac: Backup annual emails, tasks, calendar & folder structure locally

I recently changed from PC running Windows 7 and various versions of MS Office to MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015), 3.1 GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB memory running El Capitan and Office 365 for Mac.

I have used Outlook for Windows since its first release in 1997.  For work reasons, I retain copies of all emails, tasks and calendar items applicable to each calendar year locally, and access them periodically.  In Outlook for Windows I would do this as follows: When one year ended, I would simply start a new .pst file and drag over any emails and tasks that i was still working on, recurring appointments and current contacts.  I would then close the previous year's .pst file, thereby retaining the email folder structure and task categories and keeping everything for that year in one placeVoila: a local, easily accessible archive of past year.

Is there a way to effectively do this with Outlook for Mac?  I can see that the data is handled completely differently, with each email, task and calendar item stored as a separate file, with no apparent (at least to me so far) relationship to the "On My Computer" folder structure I set up within the Outlook for Mac program. The "import" function converted my .pst file to Outlook Mac and blew the email, calendar and task items out into thousands of individual files.  I looked at the archive tool, but there doesn't seem to be any way to maintain the folder structure, which is essential because whenever I do need to access past year's information, I need to view the emails by project (email folder).

I realize that when it comes to .pst files, once I go Mac I can't go back (without a conversion tool and access to a Windows version of Outlook, which I won't have), and I can live with that if I can find a way to archive my past year in Outlook for Mac, and also to access my .pst files going back to 1997 without losing the internal folder structure.  Is this possible?

Many thanks for any help you can give.
