Cracked iPhone screen, can't unlock.

I recently cracked my iPhone 6 screen and it doesn't register fingerprint or touch screen and I need to unlock it somehow so I can back it up to my iTunes. Is there any solution to this problem? I want to back it up because my replacement phone (thank goodness for insurance) will be here soon and I want to be able to transfer everything over like it never happened. Any suggestions?

As is always the case, the time to have backed up was before a crisis occured, not after one has already happened. You cannot backup that device, and if your insurance requires you to return it in exchange for the replacement, you cannot go off and have it worked on by someone. If you do, it's quite possible your insurance will charge you full price for the replacement, so check your coverage terms and conditions carefully before doing anything with the damaged device.

Stranger things have happened, however... I had a powerbook stolen from my car in a parking lot (broke a window) - my auto insurance (Allstate) policy for did NOT cover it but my homeowner's policy (ALSO Allstate) DID!! (same 'agent' for both, BTW) - as you can see, I was not at home in any way!!

Not knowing where the OP is of course I can't say for sure. But, I assumed they simply meant a carrier or 3rd party cell phone coverage specifically and only for the phone. Those sorts of cell phone only policies in the USA are very limited. They replace the device, often with a used or 3rd party "refurbished/reconditioned" device but there are absolutely zero additional features covered. And they almost always want the old device sent to them promptly or they levy a charge for the replacement.


i really, really, really wish we could just get the message across to people to backup their data - on their phone, their tablet, their computer. Ultimately the only person who even cares about your data is you so people really need to recognize, if it's important to them, they need to secure backup copies themselves. So many of the daily posts here could be so trivially easily solved if people just had a backup.

Reading it again, this probably is the type of insurance mentioned. In Australia, having someone hook on a temporary screen in order to make a backup wouldn't be an issue.

I agree. It's crazy. People tend to learn the hard way. This will always exist unless there's a way to eradicate complacency and procrastination from the human makeup. But until then, there are services available to people who find themselves in this self imposed situation. A little like how there will always be hospitals treating people for problems caused by their own negligent behaviors.

A personal communication "appliance" sold en masse as "easy to use" oughta have a BIG RED STICKER on the display plastic protector saying BACK UP EARLY AND OFTEN! After that, they have been forewarned!
