Q: Remote File Sharing between iMac and Macbook Air

I recently bought an iMac 4k retina thinking that I could connect it via thunderbolt to my Macbook Air and use it as a monitor when at home with my work Macbook Air.

It turns out this is impossible with the new iMacs.

So, I would like to turn the problem onto its head:  practically speaking, I need to be able to access the files on my Macbook Air from my iMac when I work at home, without having to have double copies, etc..  Emails I can check on the iMac with Mail no problem and keep everything sync'ed.

Can I connect my Macbook Air with the thunderbolt cable to the iMac and consequently have access to the HD of the Macbook Air and work that way, thus always keeping the original documents on the Macbook but accessing them freely from the iMac when connected?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4), retina 4k display
