Burnin' Coal

Q: Constant "Your system has run out of application memory"

At wits end....2011 iMac with 4GB RAM and 750GB free on HD....computer is almost unusable with semi permanent spinning ball and constant Force Quit boxes with warning "Your system has run out of application memory"

From reading and rereading similar posts on a myriad of forums I ask for help...I understand how to open Activity Monitor....from the extremely long list of Process Names I am guessing there are several that are either adware or some form of unwanted memory hog....one in particular is USERNOTED but I dare say there are several others

When trying to use Photoshop earlier the machine ground to a halt...Activity Monitor showed 1GB for Photoshop and almost all the rest of the CPU was being taken up by USERNOTED....but looking at the box with memory pressure there were huge red peaks then it would drop to almost nothing and then another spike...like watching a heart beat...and that was without me touching any controls - it was just pulsing on its own

I have run an /sbin/fsck check and it tells me the system is all good so am guessing I have a gremlin in the RAM

So...million dollar question....in terms that a completely untech savvy person can understand...what do I look for ? and how do I fix it ?

Thank you for all and any help however any suggestions to install MacCleaner will be ignored

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion

It may simply be you need to set a larger buffer size in PhotoShop. Of course you may actually be running low on memory if you don't have enough installed for the applications that you run concurrently. Four GBs isn't much for OS X and a couple of major apps like PS.

Thankyou both for such a fast response....yes I realise I may well need to upgrade the RAM but wish to find the glitch first rather than let it lurk in a huge open field as it were

I will run etrecheck now and paste up the result...having never done anything like this is there any sensitive info on the etrecheck that needs to be redacted ? or is it just tech speak ?

    Thanks for your patience

no, the developer of this app is a volunteer here and to provide an app that did post private info would violate the TOS

Here what mine looks like, there's nothing personal in it -  And btw I don't even use public bathrooms - for any reason.

Thanks Jimmy...am a total novice in all this...above is my report...can see stuff in red and imagine that's bad...hopefully it will make sense to you guys

still looking. Red does not necessarily mean bad, but it generally doesn't mean good either. It's kind of "pay attention" to this

you have a decent amount of Canon software running and some outdated calibration software but my first recommendation (aside from more RAM in that computer)  is to remove the TomTom drivers,

    http://us.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/15939/~/how-do-i-remove-tom tom-home%3F

    MAC OS X (APPLE)

    1. Click and hold the HOME icon in the Dock, then choose Quit to close it.
    2. In the Finder menu, click GoApplications.
    3. Drag the TomTom HOME application to your Trash.

the bad news is I was hoping for more (but this has got some leads so don't fret just yet)

the good news is the 12,1 iMac is expandable to 32GB of RAM (and it's fairly cheap) and if you have discovered that Apples proclamation that OS 10.11 runs in 2GB RAM was made at 4:20 PM after a huge bag of weed and some awesome mix of Bob Marley or that 4GB RAM is a bottleneck for anyone using photoshop or print graphics (I'm guessing at this because I see calibration in your apps) even kicking this system up to 8GB RAM is going to make a massive difference in the performance.

Knowing that is that is a great help already...the Canon stuff could go as well if you could show me the way as it is for a printer not currently in use...

Re the Tom Tom...this will be something my other half has used/installed - before I remove it could I please just get an idea of what it's doing/why it's bad so that I get the story straight ? Thanks

In the midst of gnashing of teeth you actually made me laugh out loud - priceless !...and yes I use the iMac primarily for scanning negatives into Photoshop...am I right in thinking this model can go up to 16GB of RAM ?

I recall reading it was poorly coded and very chatty in OS X so it just a red flag. Some of these resident apps are recompiled from Windows and are messy when running on intel macs or the programmers are just not very Mac efficient and the result is poorly integrated software.

    EDIT:

that model will go to 32 GB RAM as two (4) 8GB PC3-10600 DDR 3 chips,

whatever RAM you plan to go with get two chips. if 16GB is the goal than two (4) 4GB PC3-10600 DDR 3 chips

If you are in the US you can try OWC computing

    http://www.macsales.com/

i've bought RAM from them since 1997 and others on the fourm have expressed they like them and trust them. They are mac savvy and they've been around.

also on the calibration software, it looks like they stopped developing it years ago. I don't know if would cause a problem but does it integrate with some calibration HW or do you need it, could you use Apples calibration instead?

It may not make much of a difference but the less you have running on this 4GB system there may be SOME difference, but there is going to be a point where it's the law of diminishing returns.

The 4GB you have in there now is a problem, especially if you use photoshop for hi-res assets. You can probably hear your HD spinning away when you clone brush because they system is clamoring for RAM right now.

It is true that OS X is happier with a lot of RAM, and I would really consider 8GB the adequate RAM for El Capitan. 2GB is simply not realistic for real life use, but you should be able to work with 4GB.

There is something else here. There are a few hundred MB of free RAM and no swap space being used, so there should not be any processes killed for insufficient ram.

I have the same model iMac running with 8 GB of ram and do not have any problems what so ever.

The Silverfish software is causing some issues.  Make sure you have the latest version installed and that it's compatible with El Capitan.  The same goes for Photoshop Elements.  It's creating crash reports.  You might remove them and reinstall.

Give the following a try: Boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, reboot normally and check to see if performance improves.

If you updated your system thru the App Store download and apply the  OS X El Capitan 10.11.4 Combo Update. The Combo updaters are known to help fix problematic installations. Worth a try.

Thanks....Tom Tom now in the trash....I was looking to uninstall the Canon printer but from looking in Applications it appears that I already have done so...could what you are seeing be some residual leftovers ?...if so how do I get rid of them ?

Yes...if/when I get rid of these gremlins then a memory upgrade is clearly the way forward so thanks for the link...using only two chips though would get me to 16GB...if I want 32GB then they only offer 4x8GB chips....would that still work ?

The calibration is specifically for my negative scanner so would rather not delete it for now as I have the iMac monitor linked/calibrated with the scanner

Thanks Old Toad....the Silverfast crashes have been resolved after direct contact with their (very efficient) tech support team...the crashes were an issue between their software and El Capitan...went back a step and sorted
