Q: Can I change the sound of a movie but leave the video part untouched (to maintain quality)?

Noticing a significant video quality drop in a pre-existing movie clip when I change only the sound of the clip. Can I prevent the video part from being processed when I only need to change the sound? If not, how do I get the best video quality possible?

Final Cut Express 4, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I think FCE works the same in this regard as FCP. If you unpatch (probably A1 and A2) and then edit the new audio-only file to the timeline, you should be in business.

Here is a related article that may be helpful.

The advice I gave above isn't entirely right. (Relying on memory and it's been a while.)

Lock the video track before you edit the new audio into the sequence.

Looks like you're exactly right. But unfortunately FCE4 isn't respecting the lock I put on my video track. I still get reduced quality. In addition I'm also getting reduced video size (which is rather unexpected). There is probably a way to get this program to behave as intended, I'll keep snooping around and probing it until I crack this. Maybe if I render the thing and THEN export to QT it will work. I've assumed rendering happens when you export (even if you don't render prior to exporting). Good thing I'm retired! Thanks, though! Let me know if something else occurs to you later.

Editing or changing the audio tracks associated with a video clip should have NO effect whatsoever on the video.

Let's start with basics ... what are your sequence settings (compressor, frame size & vid rate) ... and the clip properties (compressor, frame size & vid rate) for the clip you want to change the audio in?  Do they match?

Also, you should UNLINK the audio tracks from the video track before you try to remove or replace the audio in the clip.

In the Browser, for the original video clip, the frame size is 1920 x 1080, video rate 23.98 fps, compressor H.264.

I'm familiar with "Systems settings" but not "Sequence settings."

Assuming you mean the empty Sequence 1 in the browser: it has a frame size of 720 x 480, video rate of 29.97 fps, compressor DV/DVCPRO -NTSC, so nothing appears to match - but I don't know what to do about that. I still haven't figured out what the empty Sequence 1 in every project is for. I'm learning by using the FCEx pdf manual and the FCE4 book and DVD by Tom Wolsky. And various online resources as needed

The new sound is an mp3 with rate of 22.4 kHz, and the original sound (which will not be used) is 44.1 kHz. The empty Sequence 1 is 48 kHz

    Thanks for your help.

Your MP3 is the main problem.  FCE has never supported MP3 audio.  Convert your MP3 to AIFF/16-bit (aka 48KHz) stereo, then import it into FCE.

The empty "Sequence 1" is the default sequence you get whenever you create a new project.  You can use it (probably best to rename it) or delete it if you are not going to use it.

    John,

Another problem ... your video clips are 24fps (23.98 fps) ... and FCE doesn't support 24fps material.  Never has.  This is probably another reason why you are having difficulty replacing the audio track(s) in your Sequence.

In addition I noticed your clip properties are 1920 x 1080, video rate 23.98 fps, compressor H.264.   AVCHD/H.264 video needs to be transcoded to Apple Intermediate Codec for editing in FCE.  FCE does not natively edit H.264 video even though you can import those kind of clips into FCE.  Normally FCE automatically transcodes AVCHD/H.264 clips to Apple Intermediate Codec when you use FCE to ingest those clips directly from your camcorder.   AND then you have to create a Sequence that has properties that match your clips ... as in Easy Setup = AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50 ... however even that Easy Setup would not match your clips since your clips are 24fps!

So there are multiple issues here that are all probably related to the problems you have encountered.

Unless you re-shoot or convert your clips to a form that FCE can actually edit (for example, to Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i50)  you may not be able to overcome the problems you are experiencing.   (And unfortunately I do not know of any software to recommend to convert your clips.)
