Q: Expanding the Running Log-template

Hi!

A couple of months ago a started using the Running Log that comes with Numbers for iOS. I really like it, it's super easy to use and it gives me a lot of nice information about my progress.

I especially like the chart that shows the change in my pace. It gives me a clear indicator that I'm getting better at running.

But now that I've gotten in to it a bit, I would like to get a little bit more detail out of the data. Specifically I would like to make another chart, similar to the original pace chart, but that only takes in to account some of the logged runs, that meet certain criteria. Say for instance it only uses data from runs that are between 3 and 4 k. Or that are longer than 5 k.

I'm a complete noob with Numbers so even searching around the web for help with this has been tricky. I would very much appreciate if anyone could help me understand how Numbers work with this kind of thing, or just point me to were I could find relevant information.

Thanks a bunch!

ps. I'm using Numbers for iOS on my iPad. I've posted this in the Numbers for Mac forum because I could find a iOS specific forum. Sorry if its not in the right place!

    It's a nice template. More specifics are needed on exactly what changes you want to make. (You have just expressed some general wishes.) This template works exactly the same on an iPad as on the Mac but modification is much easier on a Mac than on an iPad.  Do you have access to a Mac?

    to achieve what you want, select all the objects on the "Running Log" Sheet, and duplicate them so there is a second copy.  I am doing this on Mac OS X because I do not have any devices with iOS that have Numbers.

    you should select EVERYTHING that exists, then duplicate it all and place like this:

    The copy on the left is still the place where you enter ALL your running information.

    Add a new column to the table on the left like this:

    Screen Shot 2016-03-31 at 3.07.42 PM.png

    The new column is column E:

    make the title for column E "DISTANCE 4 MILES OR ABOVE"

    in column E add the formula in to cell E2

    =IF(C2≥VALUE(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE($E$1,"DISTANCE ","")," MILES OR ABOVE","")), 1+MAX(E$1:E1), "")

    shorthand for this is:

    E2=IF(C2≥VALUE(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE($E$1,"DISTANCE ","")," MILES OR ABOVE","")), 1+MAX(E$1:E1), "")

    select cell E2, copy

    select cells E2 thru the end of column E, paste

    Now in the duplicate table (on the right), you can collect the information from the table on the left

    select cell A2, then paste the formula:

    =IF((ROW()−1)≤MAX(Runs::$E),OFFSET(Runs::$A$1,IFERROR(MATCH(ROW()−1, Runs::$E,0), 0)−1, COLUMN()−1), "")

    shorthand for this is:

    A2=IF((ROW()−1)≤MAX(Runs::$E),OFFSET(Runs::$A$1,IFERROR(MATCH(ROW()−1, Runs::$E,0), 0)−1, COLUMN()−1), "")

    select cell A2, copy

    select cells A2 thru the end of column E, paste

    The data and chart should update:

    Thank you Wayne! This seems like exactly what I'm wanting to do.

    Now just comes the problem of me being very new to Numbers . I've got the spreadsheet opened on my Mac and I'm trying to follow your instructions.

    I cant seem to get the formulas in correctly though. I've created the new column E in the left table, but when I copy and paste your formulas into E2 I get a "formula contains syntax error" and a red triangle in the cell. Maybe I'm pasting it in wrong? I've marked the cell then selected "create formula" from the formula drop down button.

    Pasting it directly into the cell just puts it in as text, and that's not right is it?
