My Airport Extreme (serial # C86MJH81FJ1R) version 7.7.3 starts flashing amber periodically and I can hear the fan running when it does. Airport Utility says that the device may be overheating yet it is cool to the touch. Any thoughts or solutions would be appreciated. Thanks. Ron...

Footnote #4 is what the Genius Bar rep pointed me to when I requested a replacement because I had an Applecare eligible product. On the bright side, in this thread someone mentioned that disabling file sharing eliminated the overheating message, which worked for me, so I no longer need a replacement anyway. Appreciate your follow-up.
Replied to another thread with this same info, I was at the Genius Bar today and apparently now Applecare + on an eligible product only gets you a warranty replacement products purchased within two years. Not sure if this is a change in Apple's policies or just widely disseminated incorrect information.
If it's a new AppleCare policy change, then I would expect Apple to amend their current AppleCare Protection Plan document to reflect that. Otherwise, you can take a copy of the document to the Genius Bar you visited and have them explain why they are not following Apple's own plan.
The 802.11ac AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule employs a fan near the top of the unit that draws in air from the bottom. Be sure to check the base to see if there is anything blocking it. To get a better idea on what is going on inside your base station, please take a look at this iFixIt site.
Ok, with that said, what can be done about it. Unfortunately, not much. Disassembling the unit would potentially void any warranty and not necessarily fix anything. The potential issues are either a faulty fan or power supply or both. Of course, I am assuming that you are operating your base station in a relatively cool environment, not near any object that may obstruct the base, or not inside a closed space.
Thanks for the reply. I have the base station up high on my desk, away from any heat sources and like I said, it's cool to the touch. I guess I'll make a genius bar appt. and see if anything can be done to fix it.

Did the Genius Bar resolve this for you? I have an Airport Extreme with the same problem. Fan ramps up and amber light flashes for about 30 seconds periodically. Airport Utility suggests it is overheating but it is not hot and and is functioning normally. Fan will stop again after 30 seconds.
If the product is less than 1 year old, Apple will replace the device for you.....or.....if you have AppleCare in effect on a qualified product, the AirPort Extreme will be covered for up to 3 years from its purchase date.
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately it is over a year old (Jan 2015) and I have no Apple Care on it. I do have Apple Care on my iMac which was bought a month ago. What constitutes a qualified product?

Any computer, ipad or Apple TV is qualified and covers the Airport router. Just take it to the apple store and it will be replaced for you.
AppleCare on a Mac is different than AppleCare on an iPad. My Time Capsule is almost 3 years old, but it was replaced by Apple under the AppleCare umbrella.
