gift card purchase

I have a iphone4s ( with iOS 9.3) and my daughter has a iphone 4 ( with iOS 7) . She has to seek my permission before making a purchase on iTunes and this was straightforward in the past as I would simply respond to a notification sent to me as a result of her request and type in my Apple password..

Recently she was due to go to Spain and she wanted to make some iTunes purchases. I received the notification and typed in my password but no purchase was made .As time was limited I gave her a £20 Apple Gift Card. How does she make a purchase with the gift card and do I need to give her my authorisation ?

iPhone 4, iOS 7.1.2

What sort of gift card is it, Apple Store or App Store/iTunes ? Apple Store gift cards can only be used in Apple's shops and their online store (not for iTunes).

If it's an App Store or iTunes gift card she should be able to redeem it onto her account : Redeem iTunes Gift Cards and codes - Apple Support

If you have 'ask to buy' enabled on her account you should, I think, still have to approve her purchases, but her account's balance (from the redeemed gift card) should automatically be used for her purchases (if she exceeds the balance the excess will be charged to the card on your, as the family organiser, card).
