Q: New pictures imported from my camera to Photos are not being pushed to My Photo Stream

It used to work fine in iPhoto.

I would import images from my digital camera to my Mac and they would also move automatically into My Photo Stream  I could then see them on my iPhone and iPad.

However, moving over to Photos has stopped this from working. Pictures I take on my iPhone and iPad are being put into My Photo Stream and I can see them on my Mac, but it won't work the other way around as it did before.

Any ideas or help appreciated.

What are your preferences settings for iCloud in Photos on your Mac and in Photos on your iPad and iPhone?  Which version of iOS are you using on your mobile devices?

Disable My Photo Stream and iCloud Photo Sharing in the System/iCloud preference pane

and in Photo's iCloud preference pane.

Reboot and reenable both respectively. That should jump start Photo Stream.

independent of the PhotosStream problem, update your iPhone and iPad iOS 9.3.1 to get the recent bug fix installed:   http://www.macrumors.com/2016/03/31/apple-releases-ios-9-3-1/

Tried as you have suggested above Old Toad, but still no luck.

Not sure if anyone else out there might have some bright ideas to get this fixed?

Did you also try to disable My Photo Stream on the iPad and iPhone and then turn it on again?

Your iPad and iPhone are connected to Wi-Fi and fully charged? The Camera.app is closed?

Get help using My Photo Stream - Apple Support

How are you checking on the devices of My Photo Stream is uploading?   If you have iCloud Photo Library enabled on these devices, the my Photo stream album will be hidden.  The photos will appear in the All Photos album, hidden between the other photos.

Where is your Photos Library stored on your Mac?  In your Pictures folder or on an external drive?

Yes, I did disable My Photo Stream on my iPhone and then turn it back on again.

I am not using iCloud Photo Lobrary.

PHotos to are stored on an external hard drive which I connect via USB to my Mac.

To be clear as well, it seems that photos I import from my Canon camera into Photos on my Mac are not automatically moving into the My Phot Stream folder, hence why they aren't pushing to my phone.

I cant drag new photos into the My Photo Stream folder.

However, any pictures I take on my iPhone are syncing back to the My Photo Stream folder on my Mac. It's the other way that things are not working.

Is this the Photos using a referenced library or the Photos library using a managed library? And is the library marked as the systems libary  in the Photos preferences?

I have definitely set this external hard drive library as the system library in Photo's preferences.

I am unsure of the difference between a referenced and managed library I'm afraid, so can't give you an answer. The library was originally set up by iPhoto though if that helps.

The difference in referenced and managed depends on the way you import your photos.  A library is referenced, if you do not let iPhoto or Photos copy the images into the library, but reference them in a folder outside the library. This is controled by the Preference "Importing" in the General preferences of Photos.

Referenced photos cannot upload to iCloud Photo Library.  Create a smart album to check if you have referenced photos in your library.

Use the command "File > New Smart Album".

Then set the constraint to "Photo is Referenced".

    Is this album empty?

While you are checking your photos for compatibility with iCloud, try another smart album:

Yes, I always use Photos to import my pictures.

The "Copy items to the Photos library" option in preferences is checked.

When I create both of the smart albums you mention above, they are both empty.

I assume then that this means my library is managed.
