Q: Google Maps shows a blank screen in Safari 9.1

Hi.

I've been trying to solve this problem for a client for some days now. When I try to open Google Maps in Safari, I get either a completely blank screen or the same screen with some text (so far it has said both "Google Maps" and "<"). Very occasionally, I will actually be able to use the site properly, seemingly at random. This problem does not occur on Google Chrome which is also installed on this computer, but my client insists on using Safari.

I have tried clearing the cache using "Safari > Preferences... > Privacy > Remove All Website Data" to no avail. I have also tried updating the system to the latest version of El Capitan, hoping it would include an update for Safari that would solve the problem. Again this proved useless.

Can anyone help me pinpoint and solve the problem?

Unfortunately, none of the ideas you suggested have solved the problem. As I posted earlier, I have already tried clearing the cache. Safari doesn't have any extensions and the only plugin is Flash Player. Parental Controls are also disabled.

However I have found out that the issue is related to the anti-virus program my client has installed (Kaspersky Internet Security for Mac).

If I turn off the 'Web Anti-virus' option Google Maps works perfectly fine. I have tried making an exception for Google Maps in Kaspersky's settings, but no dice. My client would rather not disable his anti-virus, so is there any way to make Maps work again without disabling the anti-virus altogether?

I think many Mac'ers these days are of the view that putting any sort of third-party anti-malware on to a Mac is a recipe for eventual disaster. It usually ends up corrupting OSX or preventing apps from working properly. Generally speaking, Macs don't need any. However, by the same token Apple expects you to be a sensible user of the Internet, being constantly wary of suspicious-looking webpages, over-inviting hyperlinks, and e-mail phishing and scams.

Do bear in mind that Apple's incorporated a certain degree of protection within OSX itself (and within Safari), so as long as you keep OSX and Safari up to date you'll be protected from some of the worst possibilities. Also, a further degree of protection comes from turning on the Mac's firewall. For that, I'd recommend you only partially use that, though, configuring for little more than stealth mode. The firewall works only for inward connections, though, meaning that if you were unlucky enough (or pehaps foolish enough) to have invited a trojan on to your Mac, whether knowingly or not, it could set up one or more outward connections. The router will also be a barrier, via its NAT translation (that too works only in the inward direction).

No anti-malware on this planet is ever 100% effective. Most of it tries to deal with the situation 'after the event', which isn't a great deal of use. My long experience with anti-malware on Windows PCs showed that it invariably became over-bloated, used too much of the PC's resources, and eventually became unmanageable.

My advice would be for you and your client to remove the Kaspersky software, ensuring that you also deal with the extraneous files left in the Mac's Library and other folders.

Remove Kaspersky as a test. If your client wants it, you can always reinstall it later.
