Q: New Macbook want Pictures not Photos

Hi - I have a brand new Macbook Pro and I want to import all my travel photos for easy reference.

However in my last laptop I only used Pictures - and had separate folders inside the Pictures section.

I have never used iPhoto and am not keen to try and learn something completely different.

I then used Picasa for editing.

Should I just delete Photos and then import to Pictures instead so I can begin installing them and editing them in my usual way?

What is the best way to go about deleting Photos folder/section so that it doesn't predict that is where your photos should go and allows them to go into the Pictures folders.

Thanks

MacBook Pro

Well we certainly aren't on good terms this laptop and I.  After deleted a folder of about 30GB of photos and videos to free up space because it is so limited, now I can't access any photos - when looking through images to try the methods recommended here to see next image ...

a video came up as part of a folder and once clicked on realised it was from a folder that had just been deleted.

"videos with unavailable original files cannot be opened" - so I clicked on Cancel but it wouldn't go off the screen and nowhere to close the Photos other than Quit, which didn't work, then ended up Force Quit.  Waited a while, reopened Photos and the same image and message came up.

So then again quit, force quit - then restart computer - assuming by then it would realise the folder doesn't exist any more and reboot itself.

Now I cannot use Photos at all because it won't clear that message.

    Any advice?

EDIT:  Just hit Cancel button about twelve times and finally the frozen image cleared. Back to square one.

HOWEVER - the recently deleted folders are STILL in Photos - when will they disappear?

When you are using "Quick View" to preview any files (including photos) the arrow keys are essentially stepping through the files as displayed on your screen in finder. So if the files are in a grid then you will get to the end of a row and need to use the down arrow then left arrow to move back along the next row.

This gives you the idea it is best to set your view in Finder to list mode (View > as lists or use CMD 2). You may also like the View > as columns option. Then you can keep stepping using the down arrow key continuously.

As for your deletion of photos which are now missing from Photos this is the downside of storing the images outside the Photos library. If you delete the file or folder in your Pictures directory you also need to delete it in the Photos Application. If you need to delete items you added to the Photos application you should have deleted them via the Photos Application (and emptied the Photos trash).

I think you need to book yourself in at an Apple store for one to one lessons to help you get the most from your MacBook, OS X and the Apple applications.

Thanks for your help, managed to work those things out but your reply reassures me I am understanding correctly.

Would love to visit Apple but we are a long way from the city.  These forums are a great support for those at great distance.  Would be good to have video tutorials which I am sure there are so will begin Googling and getting more answers.

What I have discovered from all the answers is that I bought the wrong laptop, Picasa is no longer, getting used to Photos (quite quickly thanks to your replies) and realising that I will have to work differently to my usual habits to get the most out of this purchase.

    Thanks again
