iPod Classic 160GB water damage - device has been stored in rice for 3 days and now I get a red encircled X with this URL: any suggestions to save this device?

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

Three days is probably not long enough to get rid of the internal moisture, which can cause short circuits and damage. You may want to wait longer...


Do a Reset (restart) on the iPod

If that gets you back to the same error screen, try putting it into Disk Mode

Then, connect it to your computer running iTunes. If iTunes picks it up, it may prompt you to do a Restore with a message about "recovery." If you are OK with erasing the iPod, do the Restore.


If the iPod does not go into Disk Mode, or the Restore fails, the iPod may have a hardware problem. Water damage is often permanent.

Thank you. I will give the iPod more time in the rice, or possibly a stronger drying agent (see other response). Then I will try resetting. I have a lot of music and audiobooks on iPod, basically using it as an external HD which I didn't always back up (lesson learned), so would rather not lose that, but that can be replaced easier than the iPod - I love this "older version", now that the wheel control has been discontinued by Apple. Thank you for your prompt and informative response - greatly appreciated.
