It sounds like your Netflix app seems to be quitting to the home screen inconsistently. I would start by restarting the Apple TV if you haven't already:
For Apple TV (3rd generation and earlier), go to Settings > General > Restart.
If that doesn't work I would next restore the Apple TV with iTunes. You will need a micro-USB cable to do so:
