Q: iPhoto to Photos problems

Dear Apple community,

I have seen huge numbers of questions, comments and criticisms of Apples movement from iPhoto to Photos. And I am having a very hard time getting to the bottom of all the issues and processes, and which ones are applicable to me and my situation.  With that said, I wanted to start a fresh discussion just for my situation and ask you all all a few questions.

1) Do I actually need to migrate from iPhoto to photos?  I'm not really a heavy user, and am much more concerned with organization rather than editing.

2) Addressing the question above, is there a much better program out there for photograph organization other that what is embedded in Apple products?  I' m MORE that happy to switch out of Apple's product at this point.  Please take note apple - and that there is nowhere I have seen any form of client/user satisfaction survey in this new product or service Photos.

3) Now that I have migrated from iPhoto to Photos, it seems as if I have duplicate photos and ' library'  files.  And what exaclty is a library and why is an iPhoto library not fully compatible with a Photos library?  Or are they . . . .  I don't see where all my albums are recreated, or faces redone.

4)  Any thoughts on how to take my iPhotos library, Photos, and all the back ups I have made and sort them all and eradicate dupilcates?   I have tried to back up my photos, so now have iPhoto, Photos, and external drive Libraries.  Is there a place I can dump them all, sort out and then back up a proper non-duplicated library?

Sorry if all sounds long winded, but these programs do no not seem to work well together and I have some very valuable memories here I do not want to neglect.

Any help at all would be great and thanks for reading my post.

All the best to you.

1 - no unless you plan on doing future OS upgrades or want to order print products - as long as your system does not every change again then iPhoto will continue to work

2 - not in my opinion - the experienced user here use Photos which is why they are experienced Photos users - post to a Lighroom forum and you will ger answers form experienced LR users , etc - if you disagree then you are free to use any software you want - I choose Photos

3 - No - there are not duplicate libraries nor are there duplicate photos - each library is totally independent and separate and nothing is duplicated - they do share the same originals and previews using hard links - Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support - so deleting one save very little space and is not recommended until you have at least three month experience but you can delete either with no effect on the other if you want and you are willing to accep not having the ability to use one program in case you need or want to - as to why are there separate libraries? Really simple - they are separate programs that operate totally differently and therefore each needs its own library

4 - not really and no need to - use the program you want and after several months (at least three) you can delete the library for the one you are not using - as to backups just let them expire and TimeMachine will clean up as it needs to - anything you do is more likely to cause problem than to help in any way

as to working together - not at all - Photos and iPhoto are separate programs and do not work together at all - each has its own data and each is totally separate from the other - nothing at all in common
