You may want to try going to Safari Preferences > Privacy > click Details (below Remove all website data), search for iCloud, select iCloud.com and then click Remove to see if clearing the cache, cookies, etc helps.

Thanks for your advice, but afraid it did not work for me. I've tried reinstalling El Capitan including 10.11.4 from scratch, but no joy. I'm sure it's something very simple and I'll get it sorted out. iCloud is working fine and I can access iCloud Drive, Notes and Photos ok from Finder on my MBA and app on my iPhone. Thanks anyway for taking the time to respond. BB
