This definitely shouldn't have happened, was you using the official adapter and cable?
If so, I would reccomend starting a live chat with apple as soon as possible to arrange taking this into a store as this is a fairly urgent issue.

I would assume that over the course of 28 days, the OP would have taken care of the issue, and that appears to be an official Apple device.
