I was just doing some photo editing in preview and all of a sudden every file I open already has "rectangular selection" checked. "Crop" is greyed out. I can't uncheck the rectangular selection or choose any other edit option. I don't know what happened. Anyone have any thoughts?

It might be helpful if you mentioned the versions for your operating system and Preview application.
For every version of Preview that I have worked with, you use the "rectangular selection" tool to select part of your image and then the Crop tool crops to that selection. (So the Crop menu item is grayed out unless you have made a selection to which you can crop.)
...and to get the "rectangular selection" tool, if you don't see it, go to "Edit" > Select All > and drag the selection marquee over your photo to select the area you want to keep, and then go Tools > Crop.
