I have an infrequently used Canoscan scanner which won't work with the new OS X driver that Canon provides because I don't have either Photoshop or Elements, according to Canon support techs. I'm supposed to install the driver into the folder for either of those apps. I don't want either of them—esp. at what they cost!—nor do I really want a new scanner since I use it so rarely. Besides, I just bought a new printer with my new iMac, thinking it was eligible for a rebate, then discovered in the small print (we all know the story) that although Mac listed it as rebate-worthy, it wasn't! So I obviously don't want to buy yet another printer with scanner, etc.
Any suggestions for a substitute for Photoshop or Elements ? Might iPhoto work?
iPhoto will not work, but another program that can use PS plug-ins, like Graphic Converter might. You can pick up PE for about $50, BTW, especially since you probably had PE 1 (which will not work in OS X) bundled with your scanner.
If you simply want to save the image you are scanning without any editing then Preview works fine - at least it does with my CS3200F. And best of all it won't cost you a cent!
If anyone out there is still dealing with this--give up! Canon was very polite and totally unhelpful--there's no way I can make my Canoscan work with OSX, and they were happy to recommend new printer/scanners for me to buy, never mind my telling them I'd just bought a new printer. So I'll install my Canoscan software on our early OSX, which has OS 9 also, and use that. Thanks for you two who tried to help!
