itunes on mac does not show attached ipod

When I attach my ipod to my mac, the device does not show up on the iTunes screen. The ipod Touch makes a beep each time I attach it. I have the latest software on ipod and imac. I have rebooted the mac and it doesn't help.

Can anyone help?

Thanks much.

iPod touch, iOS 9.3.1
