Q: iPhone 6 keeps freezing after update 9.3.1

iPhone 6 Plus, 128Gb

iOS 9.3.1 (13E238)

Firmware 4.71.00

My iPhone screen keeps freezing every so often since the last update to 9.3.1. The freezes were occasionally at start but are getting more frequent. It freezes randomly on:

  1. home screen
  2. on an app
  3. and  when a keyboard is called up too.

A possible pattern before freezes happen is the use of an app which requires some input, like typing with keyboard or dropdown, particularly Safari and Mail.

I believe the problem actually started with the update 9.3, but much less often to notice it as if it was a problem.

Restarting the phone did not help.

In addition to the frequent freezes the phone also feels much slower, quite sluggish when sliding through the home screen especially.

No new apps have been installed since the update 9.3. The phone has 17 Gb free.

The phone was bought new over a year ago so I'm unsure if this problem would be covered by Apple service too.

Please help! Anyone else witnessing the same issues?

Do you see a flickering line at the top?

No, no flickering lines. The screen just stops on occasions and touching or even pressing home button would not do anything.

This exact same thing has been happening to me! It is incredibly frustrating. I've been unable to identify a pattern. I know for certain it happens in Messages, in Safari, when trying to switch between apps, when trying to use the keyboard. There is no warning, no flicker, just suddenly everything is frozen. Sometimes it eventually comes back to life, usually I have to reboot the phone to fix it. I have noticed a general choppiness that seems to accompany animations (the zooming in on a text field, like this one, when entering text, but it seems unconnected to the freezes; perhaps it's not.)

It's getting to the point that it's starting to feel like my old Blackberry when I had to pull the battery multiple times during the day. I'm having to reboot my iPhone 6 at least twice a day.

have you tried a hard reset?

hold both the home button and power button in until the phone restarts itself.

Just a quick suggestion to try!

I have restarted the phone a couple of times (not even hard reset) and the issue stopped appearing, fortunately. To this day it has't happened again. I hope you get yours to work too! GL!

Unfortunately I do hard resets whenever it happens and although it fixes the current freeze it doesn't stop it from happenimg again in the near future.

I do think it may only be temporary freezing, however when I need the information on my phone asap I don't have time to wait, it is faster simply to perform a hard reset of the phone.

I mentioned before it appears to happen most when trying to switch between apps and entering text but scrolling may also play a part as this frequently happens when performing that motion; however it may simply the case that I notice the phone is frozen the most when I'm trying to scroll and there's no response, I honestly don't know yet what is actually causal.

I have exactly the same problem and also having to do a soft reset each day - sometimes 2 or 3 times. Have all latest software and loads of memory spare so troubleshooting guide not much help. Doing a soft reset (power and home buttons together) is time consuming. Yes it solves the short term problem but for the cost of this phone this isn't good enough. As with you all, I don't have time to muck about and the freezing has lost me a number of incoming calls.

BTW - what you're referring to as a hard reset is in fact a soft reset. A hard is where you do a factory reset - which I'm really reluctant to do given that not all of my apps on my iphone 5 reappeared on my iphone 6 (yes I did a back up before)

It would be nice if Apple bothered to join in this and tell us what they're doing about it rather than us all agree we've got the same problem!!!
