Q: Iphoto library deleted but no disk space
Hi guys,
- I am on a Late 2011 Macbook pro, with an upgraded 1TB SSD (Crucial) on El Capitan
- and have just deleted my old iPhoto library (which was 420GB) and emptied the trash
- Sadly the space didn't free up, my Photos library is 440GB and the Pictures folder size has reduced from 880GB to 460GB
- BUT my SSD (main drive) still shows as 120 GB free space only. When I emptied the trash only about 20GB freed up instead of 420GB
I have so far tried:
- waiting for Finder to catch up
- empty trash again
- reboot
- reboot in recovery mode, run disk utility, run first aid
- tried copying a folder of 200GB onto the SSD to check whether the space was actually free, just not showing, but it said "not enough space on SSD"
Any suggestions and help very welcome!
Thanks,
Daniel

This is exactly what you expect.
While the iPhoto and the Photos libraries report using that 400 or so gigs, it's the same 400 gigs. The two libraries both called the original photos their own by means of Unix Hard Links, and shared some minor elements. So, trashing the iPhoto Library recovered the space that was exclusively used by iPhoto only.
