Q: How can I get my iPhoto library into Photos?

When I switched to Yosemite, I had no idea that my iPhoto library would become inaccessible from my TimeCapsule. I have an older Mac desktop running Mountain Lion. Is there no way to get to my photos from my MacBook Pro?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

this might sound stupid, but my best option for you to try out is select all your photos in iphoto and drag it into photos. i did the same

select all your photos in iphoto and drag it into photos

This is NOT a good plan as you get only a low quality previews and your lose all metadata and organization

To migrate a library the library must be on a drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) what is directly connected to the Mac with a fast wired connection lie USB, FireWire or ThunderBolt that is not being used as a TimeMachine backup volume and that is always available prior to launching Photos

Then you open it with Photos by dragging it to the Photos icon in the Dock and letting Photos migrate the library - this keeps all metadata, edits, organization and gives you full quality photos to work with

Thanks for your reply - I asked this ages ago.

Finally, had a chance to try your advice.

When I drag my iPhoto library from the external drive that I have (Toshiba Canvio Slim), all I get is a message that says: Photos tried to repair iPhoto library, but cannot open it

How can I tell if the drive is formatted MAC OS extended (journaled), as you suggested?

    Best,

Select the icon of the drive in the Finder and use "File > Get Info". The Info panel will show you the file system in the "General" section of the Info panel. Look for "Format".
