Q: OS 10.11.4 update deleted printer drivers on my MacBook Pro

After running the latest update on my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011, 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM), I can no longer print or scan documents. All of my printers are missing from the System Preferences. I downloaded and reinstall the drivers from Apple Support. No luck...still no luck.

HELP!!!

MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), OS X El Capitan (10.11), 16GB

What should happen, is that when you re-add the printers in system preferences. You should ether get the drivers to use or if needed a pop will happen, asking you to download it. Are you able to re-add the printers?  https://support.apple.com/kb/PH21719?locale=en_US&viewlocale=en_US Since I do not know what printers you are trying to use , this is as much as I can say .

No. I downloaded and reinstalled the drivers from Apple Support when I first noticed that the drivers were missing. When I tried to re-add the printers using USB and AirPrint ...nothing happens. I get either an error message stating that the servers are not available to update the software (USB) or the program runs but no printers populate the available printer box (AirPrint). Earlier today I also followed the advice from https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203343. I renamed the Printer as Printer-Old and am currently reinstalling the drivers. I will keep you updated on my progress.

Normally the drivers are part of the install or any updates thru the app store. Or in some cases from the printer models website. That is if they have an updated driver for your operating system. While you can get print driver update thru apple support, downloads and updates. Some of them are for older operating systems. You have not told me what model and make of printer you are trying to install. If you have a usb cable for your printer, have you tried it? If you get it to show in that way , you can use a work around to get the air print setup.

Here are the printers that I've tried to reinstall over the last week.

    • HP Color Laserjet M451nw; M251dw USB & via AirPrint
    • HP Laser Jet HM201dw; P2035n via USB
    • HP Photosmart 309A; via USB & AirPrint
    • Epson Artisan 50; via USB
    • Epson Expression Premium XP-800; via USB & AirPrint

When I connect a printer, I get the dialogue box to add the printer. I follow the instructions. However, I get the error message "Setting up "[Printer] Can't install the software because is not currently available from the Software Update server."

I cannot find a workaround which is trying my patience.

The one hp printer(m451nw)has print drivers thru hp website.  The others are not shown or are outdated for El Capitan. The one Epson(X800) has drivers thru epson website . The other one is also out dated. Thru apple you would most likely be using GutenPrint drivers. If you go to the gimpprint website ,you may be able to find a driver there. The problem is that when you update to newer operating systems, sometimes you lose the use of older printers. What operating system did you have when the printers did work? When you updated ,print software is also undated and it may have even deleted some print software. Here is what apple says to do.  https://support.apple.com/kb/PH21722?locale=en_US&viewlocale=en_US

They worked for the previous version, 10.11.3. Chatted with Apple Support. Had to reset the printers. Once complete, I was able to repopulate my printers. Now I showing from the roof tops! I'm back!
