Is MacReviver legitimate and safe?

I downloaded a macreviver app and have not installed it. My mac is running slow and I want to somehow speed it up and increase its efficiency. Is this software legit, safe, or malware?

What is best program to speed up MAC?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

I downloaded a macreviver app and have not installed it.

Don't. It interferes with and slows down the operation of your Mac — even after you have removed it as a startup item. Constant annoying popup messages. To remove it, I had to search and remove all including hidden and System files that contained macreviver. It infected over 42,000 files — nearly all of which it created and took hours to remove.

It corrupted a number of my applications including About this Mac (!?!?!?). Fortunately, between having the installers and a good Time Machine backup, I was able to restore everything,

You need to figure out what the real problem is. Console.app is part of the OS and your best friend here. Google how to use and read it.

It infected thousands of my files and took hours to remove, after which, my system ran great. Crapware is as good a description as any. I bought it as part of a bundle so I don't know exactly what I paid but I wish it hadn't been included.

There is none. Keep the OS up to date and boot once a day to minimize the effects of memory leaks, caused by apps, plugins, all browsers and many web sites.

If there's a problem, it needs to be diagnosed and fixed.

Well, Macreviver can be removed as I found out but it is not a clean uninstall.

As I mentioned, go to Find in the Finder/File menu. type in macreviver. You want all files that contain the name—there's an option for that in Find. Highlight them all and send them to the Trash and empty.

Now do it again, selecting System files are included and File visibility Visible or Invisible files in the Finder/File/Find menu. Again, you want all files that contain the name, macreviver. Send every one to Trash by selecting all or by click-drag. Empty again. Finding and sending to Trash was easy but, as I mentioned previously, empting took hours. Since I had it installed only a couple of days, it 'only' created over 42,000 files that had to be purged.

This will purge some important files so you're not done. Option Boot or Command R into your Repair Partition and reinstall the Mac OS. Yes, really.

Hello Alllmonde,

I suggest you start a new thread for your issue. I'm afraid you are probably going to have some difficult choices. The first thing I would recommend is uninstalling your antivirus just to see if that is the source of your performance problems. If it is, then you've found the culprit. If not, then it could be the hard drive or some other issue. But I don't know if El Capitan gets security updates anymore. If your hard drive is failing, you probably don't want to upgrade the OS. And you don't have a Time Machine backup. There are lots of things one could try, but none of them are safe for you specifically to try.

You might want to consider adding more RAM.

The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I had 6GB installed on an early 2008 iMac supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement.
