Q: Fingerprint Failed after iOS 9.3/9.3.1 update

Long story short: iPhone 6, I downloaded iOS 9.3/9.3.1 and fingerprint scanner stopped working the same day.  Apple refuses to recognize the iOS update could've discontinued my scanner.

I downloaded the iOS9.3 update about one week ago.  That day, and every day after, my phone would randomly shut off multiple times (forcing me to restart it).  Also, that same day of the iOS 9.3 update, the fingerprint scanner stopped working.  I take extremely good care of my phone so I figured this has to be an update issue.  I went into settings/privacy trying to set up the fingerprint scanning and it wouldn't let me put a new fingerprint in, and would jump right to a "Fingerprint Failed" screen.  A couple days later, I downloaded the iOS 9.3.1 update (hoping that it would fix my problem), and it did not.  In fact, the 9.3.1 update failed to fully download, and forced me to resort to reinstalling a backup.

I later went into the Apple Store, and they said that an update could never do that to my phone, and that my phone's display must be replaced.  Then, after insisting to ask another employee for a second opinion, she came back and said she talked to 3 different employees from the Genius Bar, and that the update wouldn't have discontinued my fingerprint scanner.  She then said I must purchase a new phone, and that they couldn't fix it.  If I hadn't been a loyal Apple customer, then I would've thought for sure they were trying to just get me to update to the next model.  Has anyone else encountered this problem?

The IOS 9.3.2 update has introduced this problem to my two week old iPhone 6s. Restarting the phone did not help. I have deleted all fingerprints, but now it instantly fails to register new ones without even giving me a change to try and do one. Grrrrr!

I have the same problem after updating to the latest OS. My device is out of warranty and I can only presume there will be cost to fix it.

@Apple - I think you owe your affected loyal customers a fix.

The IOS 9.3.2 update has introduced this problem to my two week old iPhone 6s.

A two week old device is under warranty. Take it to the Apple store, get the device evaluated. If it is a hardware problem Apple will replace the device. If it is a software issue make Apple make it work, otherwise have them replace the device. Don't spend time messing with a device that is under warranty as such as device is Apple's problem, not yours.

Your device is under warranty. Go to the Apple store and get Apple to fix the device or get you a replacement device. Any Apple device under warranty that has issues should immediately be taken to Apple.

I have a 5S and that's what i have to do all the time! And yes it does work but only for a few minutes. Although sometimes it stays *ON* and works even after i put it in the pocket and out. I have no idea if this is caused by the update or not, but i have to have my finger on the scanner and rotate it in all ways to find the RIGHT angle to unlock the **** phone! It's like the capacitive ring around the home button is failing or the software is making it fail because it works PERFECTLY fine at times...

i have an 6S & the fingerprint scanner works great after i deleted the old prints & put new ones in then completely cold started the phone. It's like the way computers need to be restarted completely when you add a new program or else you get glitches.

It was funny how the scanner would not work to open the phone but iTunes could read your fingerprint with the slightest touch??? Very weird.

If i get the problem again i'll delete my prints then cold start the phone & add new prints then cold start it again. That's what computers need when you remove an old program & replace it with a new similar one. I know some computers are supposed to be able to work perfectly without the cold start etc but I've found it is needed by all of them at some time or other.

I've fixed a couple of other glitches through cold starting as well.

This is the first phone i have ever had & it is simply remarkable
