"This iCloud account cannot be used for Apple Pay"?

Hey I had this same question, so i contacted Apple Support.

Turns out because of legal stuff you cannot setup Apple Pay with a Child younger than 16 or 18 (technically an adult) I forget.

*I am a child younger than 16 and have a DEBIT card 🙂 Hope this helps.

My son is 14 and opened a high school Chase checking account and was able to add his debit card to apple pay on his apple watch and iPhone 6s. My daughter has a capital one money account which is a checking account for ages 8 - 17 and she has a debit card, but get the message "This iCloud Account cannot be used for Apple Pay." She is 11.

I also have an 11 year old which I would like to use Apple Pay. Is it confirmed that children under 13 cannot use Apple Pay? I do not see any documentation on the apple or apple pay website that says this. Would save us a all a lot of time if Apple would just tell use what the rules are.

Its not the card, its the ICloud account when setup younger than 16 or 18, but good point. The Debit card may not be accepted by Apple Pay. In this case however its the child account.

I was only able to find one other reference to that error message and it also involved a child. You may want to contact Apple Support to verify.

Your present issue may be academic.

Even if the iCloud account could be used for Apple Pay, the child's debit card would also need to be a supported card for Apple Pay (not all cards from participating issuers are necessarily supported).

You may wish to check with the card issuer to establish whether their debit cards for minors are supported for Apple Pay.
