Q: iPhone SE Bluetooth issues

I have a new iPhone SE and have so far paired it to a 2014 BMW 328i and a 2011 Kia Optima and a 2015 Kia Santa Fe. In all cases, I have terrible quality bluetooth call reception... the audio while on a phone call is extremely scratchy and distorted.

If I pair an iPhone 6S to each of these vehicles (same iOS version - 9.3.1), I do NOT experience these issues and calls are clear.

When I use the iPhone SE to make phone calls outside of Bluetooth, I have no issues and calls are clear.

This bluetooth issue on my iPhone SE does NOT impact Bluetooth music streaming. Only sounds scratchy / distorted with phone calls.

Apple, so far, is blaming the vehicle manufacturers despite there being multiple vehicle models and brands involved.

BMW and Kia state this must be an Apple problem.

Apple Genius bar is absolutely no help -- they state they can't report "software issues" to Apple and are only able to replace bad iPhones.

I'm at a complete loss as to how to get this to Apple's attention so they can fix the issue.

For now, I don't know what to do. All I know is that Bluetooth audio is very important to me in California since it is illegal to use your phone except in a hands free manner.

Anyone know how we can get this information to someone at Apple that can actually do something about it?

For those of you who's iP SE BT Problem isn't properly handled by apple's tech Support I would recommend the following:

    1. Open an issue on https://getsupport.apple.com/ and let them know you have a Problem with BT voice on iPhone SE
    2. Insert a link to this discussion (iPhone SE Bluetooth issues)
    3. Close the text box and specify that you will call them. You will get a Trouble ticket ID and a toll free phone number (on Screen an via email)
    4. Call them ....  they won't ignore your problem

    I Have to agree.

this thread has been rolling for almost 2 weeks now, no official response from Apple neither. very poor show.

I took my SE back to the store, had it replaced, then took that back yesterday as well, ended up taking the member of staff outside to my vehicle to showcthe problem, as they didn't believe me, again.

Currently using my 5s again until the problem is resolved. Or should I say IF the problem gets resolved.

    Poor show Apple.

They can't fix it as they don't have a solution right now - maybe they don't even know the root cause of the problem so far. But they won't ask you to reinstall or reset your phone to factory settings, see your car manufacturer for an update or other things that won't help you. And they will keep you updated personally.

Yeah I resorted back to my 5s also, my problem was not only the bluetooth but also the screen and the  music & voice sound quality sucked compared to my older 5s.

My SE had a red tint at different angles and the sound quality sucked when transmitting music to BT speakers, using the built in speaker as well as through headphones.  The volume noticeably lower, less fidelity and less bass and volume.  I don't expect these items to be fixed so even if they would get the BT problem fixed ill still probably keep my 5s until the 7 or something comes out.  Music when working out, mowing the grass etc means alot, apparently they used cheaper components when building this model.

So a $600 billion company doesn't have the resources to fix a phone that cost them roughly $150 to make?  I think they do but the problem is a hardware problem and they don't want to do a recall

I have a solution for Apple, how about not being so freaking secretive about new phone releases and actually take time to test and retest these phones before releasing them out to the public.

Just in case it helps, I am experiencing a very similar issue with my iPhone 6s. I found this thread in a web search, and I hope that my input can help others.

Phone calls are distorted so badly that I cannot understand the person on the other end of the call and visa versa. I can hear the "cadence" of their speech patterns, but the audio is so distorted that I cannot pick out the words. Other audio (GPS instructions, music, etc.) are perfect.

The bluetooth connection is from the iPhone 6s to a Garmin Zumo 660 GPS. The Garmin Zumo 660 is connected via bluetooth to a new Schuberth SRC System Pro in a C3 Pro motorcycle helmet. (It is made by Cardo Systems, and is comparable to a G9.) I have also tried connecting directly between the SRC (helmet) and the iPhone 6s, but the bluetooth connection gets dropped all the time.

The problem is there most of the time, but I have been "lucky" and had a few clear calls, usually the first call of the day. Immediately after that good call, the next call is likely to be totally distorted. It does not seem to matter who originates the call. If I switch phone call audio to "iPhone" or "speaker", then the audio is good.

Once (and only once) I had a distorted call where the distortion was not as dramatic, and I could still understand the person on the other end of the line.

I am still troubleshooting this problem, but wanted to share in case it helps anyone else.

As expected same Bluetooth sound problems using my iPhone SE with a Nissan Leaf.

Apple support suggestion to run update and even restore via iTunes did of course not help.

Everyone I've talked to at Apple support claim that they haven't heard anything about this problem before...

I wonder how many iPhone SE users Apple support now have persuaded to make these time consuming and meaningless exercises.

OT: Does your iPhone SE power button also rattle when you shake the phone?

    Sounds very cheap.

FWIW I love this iPhone, except of course the BT.  I have no other issues with it, not the power button, screen, nor build quality.  The size is perfect and it's much lighter in the hand than my old phone.  9.3.1 is great, too.

I did call Apple Care yesterday just to add my voice to those other "early adopters" frustrated with the BT problem and the delay with getting a fix from Apple.  I'm hoping that it's not a hardware issue requiring a recall (obviously a worst-case scenario for all parties).  But, I'm not worried about Apple's bottom line, as they can easily afford the hit if it comes to that.  I'll admit that the delay in a fix is not a confidence-builder.

Here's the only thing I've found that ameliorates the BT problem: lowering the BT volume on the iPhone all the way, and lowering the car audio as low as possible.  I have been able to have conversations in this way.  Turning off LTE had no effect (I'm on Sprint which doesn't support VoLTE).  Unfortunately, car connectivity is a safety and legal issue, it's not an option in a phone today.

I'm driving a '11 Prius with no BT issues prior to the SE.

    hey there,

same here as well, bt problems with the se on a suzuki vitara with a clarion radio. works normal with the iphone 5 i still got from work.

strange thing is, when i call my mailbox, the voice is perfect and clear, if i call another cellphone the voice is very bad.

had a chat with apple support yesterday and they told my as well that they haven't heard about the problem, which i really cannot believe as several tech sites already report it, but it might be support politics

I'm using iphones since the first ones and I sadly have to admit, that apple was much more reliable in the past...

    greetings

    Same here in Holland,

Tried several cars, my BT car Audi 2012, works perfect with  4s, 5s and 6.

I love the SE ! exept for the ****** incoming sound via BT into the car (outgoing seems to be fine) .

Week ago I've contacted Apple, I was the first to report to the senior ? and they've had never heard or read about the problem ?

I've done  everything possible  to get the incoming call acceptable, with no positive outcome.

Now Apple moved the problem on to the engineers.

I don't know what the next step will be, anybody?

Sincerely hope it's not a hardware or a badge problem.

    Couple of issues I don't understand :

    -  They've made millions of phones, you might expect that they know "how to" by now?

    -  Don't they test phones in cars before going on the market ?

    -  Why don't they keep the SE-owners informed/posted ?

I will hold on to this phone and hope for a bug-fix soon.

I would suggest the Dutch buyers to report to Apple if they the have same issue, so Apple knows.

apple support suggested to me today to do a full reset and setup the iphone as new, not from a backup (i hate that as you need to set everything from scratch)

if that does not help, they want to exchange my phone.

i told them about the ongoing discussions and i also told them, that i don't think that exhanging the phone makes any sense at this stage as too many people report that problem, although there phones have been already exchanged, but they did not really comment on the fact that this seems to be a common issue, wide spreaded in the web.

i just made a quick test after resetting the phone, just on the parking lot and at least the audio was understandable, will test on my way back home from the office as well.

i really like the se, as it is pretty small and convinient, i will not give it back either, but this bluetooth thing is quite anoying.......and it would be great if apple would state any clear feedback about if the problem is know or not and if they are working on it or not. if they would tell me, it is know and will be solved, i would be already happy and wait for the fix, but this policy of ignoring so many user request is driving me crazy.

    @Bwinter,

I also made a clean install (twice) as new (kept the copy), tried the phone in the car (several times),

cleaned the pairing history and re-paird ,re-named the username and so on.

    It didn't work for me..

    Than re-installed the copy.

Succes and have  a good day.
