Q: iPhone SE Bluetooth issues

I have a new iPhone SE and have so far paired it to a 2014 BMW 328i and a 2011 Kia Optima and a 2015 Kia Santa Fe. In all cases, I have terrible quality bluetooth call reception... the audio while on a phone call is extremely scratchy and distorted.

If I pair an iPhone 6S to each of these vehicles (same iOS version - 9.3.1), I do NOT experience these issues and calls are clear.

When I use the iPhone SE to make phone calls outside of Bluetooth, I have no issues and calls are clear.

This bluetooth issue on my iPhone SE does NOT impact Bluetooth music streaming. Only sounds scratchy / distorted with phone calls.

Apple, so far, is blaming the vehicle manufacturers despite there being multiple vehicle models and brands involved.

BMW and Kia state this must be an Apple problem.

Apple Genius bar is absolutely no help -- they state they can't report "software issues" to Apple and are only able to replace bad iPhones.

I'm at a complete loss as to how to get this to Apple's attention so they can fix the issue.

For now, I don't know what to do. All I know is that Bluetooth audio is very important to me in California since it is illegal to use your phone except in a hands free manner.

Anyone know how we can get this information to someone at Apple that can actually do something about it?

If car navigation has an update, then it is good to try, but not every manufacturer will/may release software + even if update is release it doesn't guarantee that there is a fix for Bluetooth issue. For example in my case, I have few headsets that I use and there is no update for them. Hope that Apple will release official statement and will release a software update(if iOS issue).

I called Apple Support (Sweden) again today. When I said that Apple still hasn't acknowledged this problem, they told me that Apple has posted this problem on Apple.com ??? Where I wonder

I have the very same exact problem. I purchased my iPhone SE 64GB space grey the day it came out (first batch presumably). Coming from an iPhone 5 user. The call quality via bluetooth to 2010 Toyota Prius (US) is noticeably distorted. So distorted and scratchy, I have to hang up a few important calls and re-dial while disconnecting the Bluetooth. Everything sounds perfect, songs, radios, YouTube. It's just the voice call that is causing the distortion. No, it is not from my car's bluetooth because I have went back to the 5 to tested out and the sound quality for calling is crystal clear.

P.S. I'm planning to make a visit at the Genius Bar this Saturday. Tempted to hear what they would say.

Same issue- I've got an '09 sienna- never had a problem with my other iPhones. I'm picking up a new replacement SE phone tomorrow- but doubting it will fix the problem. But that was the best apple could offer for right now.

    HI all

Painfully sharing the same problem of inaudible speech of incoming calls with you all.

When the other side is using iPhone it's acceptable though.

    for the record:

    iphone se 64GB

    nissan serena 2014 (Kenwood)

    4G LTE

    Hong Kong

No problem at all when using iPhone 4 with the same car and the same service provider before.

I returned the one that I bought from t-mobile few days ago and just bought a new one, hoping that it is a newer batch/lot with slightly different internals. I haven't opened the box yet, but will do soon and report back.

I have a 2010 MB E350.  Before the software update to 9.3.1, my phones worked find connected to my car via Bluetooth.  Now my car is not listed under "My Devices" on my phone.  I cannot connect with my car. Apple customer support says it is a problem with software compatibility and that Mercedes will have to address it.  My issue is that the phone worked fine before the update, so Apple needs to work with Mercedes and develop a patch/update that would match.  Now I am forced to go to the dealership and pay about $100 for a download that I should not have to pay.

Does anyone know where I could get a d/l from the net that would take care of this?

In my case a new fresh install from Itunes solved this issue for 70% or so. I can now use bluetooth in my car, but it still needs improvement. I bet it is a software issue.

So I opened the box of brand new SE and it came with 9.3.1 out of the box. Tried Bluetooth headset again and issue is still there. I didn't even bother to restore from backup and will exchange/return it tomorrow.

As i said, the quality varies between 40 an 80 percent depending on the caller, so someone could think, it is solved or got better if he talks first with a 80% caller.

Now i use a 5S with 9.3.1 and everything is 100% fine like the years before with every caller.

It is not about special cars, its about incoming BT voice call quality caused by the iphone SE.

If there is someone with perfectly working BT, then i think it is a hardware problem.

I called Apple Support in The Netherlands. They ensured me Apple is working on a software fix. Fingers crossed. Problem occurs with 64 Gb SE in a Peugeot 308 car built in 2015. It's impossible to hear the caller. Only if they talk very slow and soft it's not distorted. No bluetooth problem with previous 4s of 6s.

Why oh why Apple do you not publish a statement on your position with this issue???  If it's a bug.... please "man up" / "grow a pair" - and let us know.  We are all human and accept that these things happen...

Please let us (new SE customers) and other (potential?) customers know what we should do, and also your staff working in Apple stores/genius bars etc...

I really like the SE phone but I will be forced to return this back to the retailer and re-use my iPhone 4 which works faultlessly with Bluetooth and is safe to use in my car.  I have written an honest review on a major UK retailer's website on the iPhone SE explaining this situation, which I know is being read by visitors and influencing their buying decisions.

Ordered the iphone SE in space grey direct from apple as not available in store, I was really looking forward to a new phone as my 4s is 5 years old and battery life is not so good.

The SE arrived 3 days ago after it's tour of the world from China, UPS kept me well informed of it's progress.

Set up was very easy backing up from my MAC but the 1st phone call from my car via Bluetooth was not good, sound quality poor and had to ask the person to repeat the words quite often, very off putting. I tried the SE via my daughters and my wife's cars and still poor quality sound although the persons who I was talking too thought sound OK.

Spoke to apple tech person who he had not heard of this problem, they put me through to sales support and again they had not heard of this problem.

Apart from this problem phone is great.

Decide to return phone to apple for a full refund, I will re-order in a couple of months when hopefully these initial design faults have been resolved. It's back to the 4s for now.

My advice, don't become a guinea pig, apple will solve quicker if phones are returned.

What perhaps annoys me the most of all, is that the Apple staff is clearly lying about it.  "Never heard of that issue".  Really?  31 pages on this forum, and for each of us reporting issues here, there is probably 1000 more that doesn't report their problems on this site.

I would have had much more respect for Apple if they said "Yes, we know about the problem, and no we don't have a fix at this time".  That would be fair and honest.
