Q: When I invoke spotlight with cmd+space the first letter of my search gets omitted

When I invoke spotlight with cmd+space to get the search-bar overlay I start typing my search-bar immediately afterwards. Often the first letter of my search query gets omitted. This is very frustrating, because I use spotlight as an application launcher: type "saf", hit enter, this launches Safari. When the first letter gets omitted the search query is "af" and hitting "enter" launches a different application or does something else completely.

This behavior happens after starting the computer and after longer periods of not using spotlight. This happens when I am using my MBP's internal keyboard or a Bluetooth keyboard. I am on OSX 10.11.4 (15E65), and an early 2015 Retina MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM.

This is super frustrating because using spotlight as an application launcher is supposed to save time, but I have to either backspace when I catch the letter being omitted before hitting enter or wait for the wrong app to launch, close it, invoke spotlight again, type my query anew and wait for the correct app to launch.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way to fix it?
