Q: Trackpad slow in Mail

Hi everyone. I use a Magic Trackpad 2 and an older Apple wireless Magic Mouse. Since upgrading to 10.11.4 the trackpad is very slow when using Mac Mail. For instance, if I click and drag to select text in an email it takes several seconds for the selection to catch up with the (invisible) cursor position. Doing the same thing with the mouse behaves normally. I have disconnected the trackpad and forgotten it and then reestablished its connection but it hasn't changed anything.

It seems fine in other applications.

    Hi dyrckfromchristchurch,

I understand your Magic Trackpad 2 is not responding well in the Mail Application on your iMac, but behaves as expected in other applications.  You also mentioned you are working at the same time with a Magic Mouse, and it isn't having issues in Mail.   What I would suggest is that you tweak the settings for the Magic Trackpad 2 in System Preferences and disable the bluetooth on the Magic Mouse to see how the Magic Trackpad 2 performs by itself.  The resource below provides some additional troubleshooting steps:

If your Apple wireless mouse, keyboard, or trackpad aren‘t working as expected

Your mouse or keyboard intermittently stops responding

Follow these steps if your mouse or keyboard sometimes stops responding temporarily.

    Click or press a key

    • Click the mouse or trackpad or press a key on the keyboard to reconnect the device to the computer. It may take a moment for the device to respond.

    Check for signal interference

    • Wireless networks that operate on 2.4GHz may cause interference. Move cordless phone base stations, microwave ovens, and other 2.4GHz electrical devices away from your Mac if you suspect interference.
    • Keep wireless devices within 10 meters (approximately 30 feet) of your Mac.
    • Avoid putting metal objects between your wireless device and your Mac.

Your mouse or trackpad doesn't track as expected

    • Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu, then choose Mouse. Set the Tracking slider to adjust how fast the pointer moves as you move the mouse.
    • If multiple Bluetooth wireless devices are in use nearby, try turning them off one at a time to see if the issue improves. Bandwidth intensive devices could affect tracking.

Learn more about what to do if your trackpad isn't tracking correctly.

    Take care,

Hi judysings and thank you for your help.

Although I now have a magic mouse installed, I didn't have when I first detected the problem. I added the mouse because I read elsewhere that someone using both a trackpad and a mouse could see that the mouse was unaffected. I have tweaked trackpad settings etc but it makes no difference.

I can also see the same effect using the trackpad on my Macbook Pro, also running 10.11.4, although it is less marked. So, using my Macbook now, selecting text in this text box happens in realtime, the blue highlighting follows my cursor with no lag, doing the same in Mail and the highlighting proceeds in fits and starts and takes a couple of seconds. If I click somewhere in this text box the cursor moves instantly, in Mail there is a distinct pause, maybe as long as 1 second. This is exactly the behaviour I am seeing on my iMac using the Magic Trackpad.

I have a number of extensions added to Mail but I have disabled them all.

    Hi dyrck,

Thanks for the update.  Since Mail is a part of the operating system, one more step you could try is to make a backup of your computer using Time Machine, then download the OS El Capitan 10.11.4 Combo Update.

    Take care,
