Q: Adobe Acrobat DC and Reader compatibility

Having major freeze/crash issues with Adobe Acrobat DC. On several computers, not just one, with 10.11.4. Also, Adobe and MS Office don't seem to play well. All Office products freezing, too. Having to manually re-boot computer.

Is there something else installed on these computer that could be causing an issue?

Any Mac Anti-Virus or 3rd party utility to "clean", "keep" or otherwise "hose" your system

    If so remove them

does this behavior happen with all PDF's or a select group or one. If select group (or one) track the original source of the files and see if generating PDF's from that system continues to cause issues. If one file only check to see if something in that file is damaged at the time the PDF is created.

if all PDFs are causing an issue

    Is your DC up-to-date?

    https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-downloads.html

does the PDF work in Preview?

No third-party software. This is occurring on three separate computers (two iMacs and one Air). ONly happened after 10.11.4 update. Serious problem with the MS Office suite as well. I even upgraded my RAM to 24GB thinking that was the issue. It wasn't (although that did speed me up). Doesn't seem to have a pattern of certain pdf files. DC is up to date. Been waiting for Microsoft and/or Apple update for two weeks now. Certainly they know this is an issue. I have to restart my computers 2-3 times/day. Manually typically.

MSO 2011 was patched in 10.11.2 from what MS decided was a "working with Apple" effort

MSO 365 and 2016 should be compatible

all that aside I'm on 10.11.2 and I have not been too "inspired" to update to 10.11.4 from reading these forums so far.

if the problem is with some PDF's and you can open in another software (e.g. preview) and reSAVE in preview as a new PDF will they open in Acrobat?

I am using 365, meaning Office 2016. It is clear that MS doesn't really care about Apple and Apple doesn't really care about MS. If Apple made a decent email program and decent page and spreadsheet programs, this wouldn't be a deal. But it is because we have to work in Office for compatibility issues with PC users.

BTW, Preview hasn't worked right since the update. When I try and open a pdf from an email, it opens preview but then goes to the "open file" dialogue box. Never can open the file. Forces me to "save as" then go open it with Acrobat.

Just sayin.' The El Capitan software plus the 10.11.4 update is a dog. Causes trouble all over and seriously slows down hard drives. I am now botting from a USB SSD.

While I understand you're having issue, blanket statements like "10.11.4 update is a dog" does not automatically apply to everyone. The vast majority of users are not having problems.

I had Office 2011 installed in El Capitan, and then Office 2016 (the perpetual license version, not Office 365). Both work just fine under El Capitan - after MS released El Capitan specific updates for both products.

Acrobat DC and the DC Reader also work with no issue for me. As does all other software I have installed. The point being you need to find out what's not working as it should on your system, and not blaming Apple or MS as not caring and producing junk. It simply isn't the case.

As far as a drive "seriously" slowing down, I'd be far more concerned the drive is dying. Backup all of your data immediately.

I have both Acrobat Reader DC 15.010.20060, and Adobe Acrobat Reader 11.0.15 (both current) installed. I can open varying size, version, and creator PDFs, and PDF/A-1a PDFs from Windows and Mac without any history of either of these applications crashing, or hanging. This has been true for every release of OS X Mavericks, Yosemite, and El Capitan. I use no additional Adobe, or third-party Acrobat plug-ins. Do a Get Info on both Reader applications. Is open in 32-bit mode set on either? I don't have this set.

On El Capitan (10.11.4), I can right-click on a Apple Mail PDF attachment, choose Open Attachment, or Open with… and select Preview. The PDF is displayed properly, and no open file dialog appears from Preview. You can save the PDF directly from Mail with the Save Attachment… menu item on the contextual right-click menu.

El Capitan is working perfectly for me, and no barking dogs here.

It sounds to me that you have some undiagnosed factors that are causing collateral issues with the normal operation of OS X and applications. It may be out of date device drivers, or unintentional infestation by malware, or some other cause. I would do the following in priority order:

    1. Launchpad : Other : Activity Monitor
      1. Click on %CPU tab to get descending CPU hogs. Anything surprise you there?
      2. Repeat this with the Disk tab to assess if there is unwarranted Bytes Written, or Read.
    2. Launchpad: Other : Console
      1. All Messages and Now selected. Last entry at bottom. Is there any obvious I/O Error messages, or intense duplicate logging entries? This is a good place to see if any storage device is slowly failing with read/write errors.
      2. When an application crashes, note the wall time, and locate that activity in the Console application.
    3. Boot into Recovery (command+R, or pressing option during boot), and run Disk Utility First Aid. It will inherently repair permissions in the System if necessary. Reboot.
    4. Reset the SMC on each machine (specifically for the application instability).
    5. Shutdown each machine. Boot into Safe Mode (slower to boot, and operationally slower because some drivers are not loaded). Notice any changes?
      1. Press and hold the shift key right after the boot chime, until you observe the usual horizontal progress bar.
      2. Press and hold the shift key again between entering your password, and clicking the right arrow to login. Release when Desktop icons appear.
    6. Run EtreCheck to let us glimpse at what is installed on your machine, including device drivers, plug-ins, malware, etc. Etrecheck is a viewer, and does not change anything in your system, or fix underlying issues that it uncovers. Post the entire EtreCheck results back here, so we can help sort what may be causing your underlying instability.

Sure, you are right. But it's a dog. I can't find a whole lot of technical language to describe it. System is slow. Shuts down. Freezes. If it was on one computer, that would be "one" thing. But it happens on the three computers I am testing. I have no special software on these computers. No virus or firewall impedance.

On three iMac, I have slow hard drive issues. I've tested the speed and these computers on hard drive run about 45-100 MB/S. On SSD they are over 400 MB/S. The former is far too slow. How slow? It takes MS Word almost two minutes to open (after computer reboot). With SSD USB drive booting? Five seconds max.

So there are hard drive issues. Would love to say it is me, but it hits every computer I have with a SATA drive. Does not affect SSD drives.

THAT STATED, the issue with 10.11.4 and Office and Adobe affects even SSD drive OS. I can't figure out what it would be, on separate computers, that has the same outcome other than (a) operating system; (b) MS and Adobe software.

So, it may be no issue for you. That's good. But it is a huge issue for me on three of the computers that I have upgraded. That isn't a chance issue.

BTW, even Apple software (e.g., Mail; Calendar) will freeze every once in a while (1-2 times week, I'm guessing).

Again, I keep my software to a minimum on the computer. I do have dropbox for business, and that can really slow a computer down, I know. But that doesn't impact the SSD drive.

A lot of issues here. Don't mean to ramble. But these things are slowly pushing me back to PC after 15+ on Apple. Also, I use high-end graphics programs, like InDesign, Dreamweaver, and Photoshop. So I do look for speed. I can't wait two minutes for a program to open, then let alone load large files. 24GB RAM... it isn't a memory issue.

Something you have an all three systems may be the cause. I'm using a late 2010 Mac Pro (purchased early 2011) with 16 GB of RAM. With a typical spinning hard drive, there's always a good minute or two lag after the desktop appears as the OS finishes updating caches and the swap file. So doing anything the moment the desktop appears will always be dog slow. My mother-in-law just purchased a new iMac to replace her 10 year old model. Same thing, as it has a 5400 rpm drive. You have to give it a couple of minutes before starting to work so the OS has time to finish startup chores on the much slower spinning platter drive.

On my Mac with a spinning drive, it would take Word (as an example) about 20 seconds to come up ready to use on its first launch. Less time if I shut it down and launch it again later during the same login session. I put in an SSD about a year ago and like you, it never takes more than 5 seconds for Word to appear. Photoshop and other large apps also load in one fourth the time or less than with a hard drive.

Another user here (etresoft) is a long time programmer (worked on flight mission software for NASA). From what he sees of OS X's behavior, Yosemite, and particularly El Capitan, are essentially designed for systems using SSD drives. After seeing the performance difference in Yosemite when I put in the SSD, I believe it. Boot up times went from about a minute and a half (just to get to the desktop) to about 17 seconds. And once at the desktop with an SSD, you can start working immediately without the hard drive lag.

So with a hard drive, two minutes for Word to open actually isn't abnormal if you're launching it the moment the desktop appears. If you've already had the computer up for five minutes or more though, something isn't right.

THanks. This is helpful just to know what others see/do. I am now thinking of installing an SSD in my other two iMacs. I just did teh USB version in this 2013 iMac because it was cheap and easy. Worked well, too. Still stupid fast through USB. Prices falling. I think we are two years away from no spin drives at all. That will be nice.

None of this, though, gets me to why I'm getting shutdowns, freezes, circle of death patterns on the three computers when typically using MS or Adobe product. We seen to notice it happens mostly when Adobe is open (so, not so much when Adobe isn't running). That could be just our casual observance, though, and perhaps we are wrong. Seems so.

That is an issue and shouldn't be happening. My Mac is populated with many of the CC 2015 apps, Quark XPress 2015, Suitcase Fusion, X-Rite i1 Profiler, Office 2016 and many other production apps. They just run. No crashes, freezing, or other such problems.

VikingOSX already made this suggestion, but it's worth repeating. Please download and run EtreCheck. Copy and paste the results here. I've linked to the developer's site, and is the only place I would suggest downloading it from. Other places such as softronic love tagging on adware to their downloads. The output may, or may not show anything worthwhile, but it can't hurt.

I do see a couple that definitely need to go.

In Chrome, open the preferences and kill any options that allow Google to collect data. That's what the com.google.keystone.agent.plist launch agent is. It's a function that continuously runs in the background collecting anonymized data about your computer, Internet and shopping usage. It then sends that data to Google for marketing compilation. All of their apps do that (such as Google Earth). As does just using Google for your Internet searches. I will not use any Google apps on my Macs.

The big sinner is CleanMyMac. It, and anything else like it such as MacCleanse, MacKeeper and other such 100% junk are all known to do things like removing system files. They should all be considered malware. Remove CleanMyMac from all of your Macs. Never again purchase or install any third party app that claims to speed or clean up your Mac. They will all do the opposite.

Since there's no way to know how much damage CleanMyMac has done (and it likely has given your performance issues), after completely removing it, make a backup and then reinstall the OS.

Although I downloaded CleanMyMac, I never purchased it. I deleted it (dragged) about three weeks ago because "it scared me." No, I do get a pop up, so it isn't totally gone. Not sure how to delete because the program doesn't show up.

FWIW this is incorrect. I have Chrome, Canary (the developer version of Chrome) and Google Earth installed on my computers. I also use Google search. com.google.keystone.agent.plist does not exist on my computers. The reason is, I have "Automatically report details of possible security incidents to Google" and "Automatically send usage statistics and crash reports to Google" unchecked in the browser preferences.

I don't mind if people don't want to use Chrome or Google Earth or Google search, but at least be accurate in your assessments.
