Phone "dies" at 20% battery

A month ago my phone began to die and "need charging" while at 20% battery. Over the last month it has gotten worse, with it needing to be plugged in at 56% this morning. As soon as I plug it in, the battery goes to back what it said previously. Occasionally if I immediately unplug it, it will die again. Sometimes it will last for hours and then die at 1% battery as it is supposed to. I was hoping the latest software would fix this as it began when I upgraded my phone to 9.2.something. Has anyone had this issue? I have an iPhone 6, I don't leave apps running, and the phone is a year and a half old. To be, it's ridiculous to be having an issue with a phone this new. Any help is appreciated!

I'd like to take it to an Apple store, but since they only warranty their $600 phones for one year, I figure there isn't much point.

Similarly, I will have to do a hard restart on my phone once a week when I am using the messaging app as my phone freezes and black screens. I'm sure it is unrelated, but figured I would bring it up.

Recalibrate your battery. Fully charge the device and then let it completely drain and turn off. Change once again.

If this doesn't work, follow the steps below.

Try to reset your device. This won't delete your data stored on this device.

  • Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button
  • Press and hold on the Home button
  • Keep holding both buttons until the display turns off and back on with Apple logo on it.

Alternatively, you may go to Settings - General - Reset - Reset All Settings

If this does not help, restore your device to factory settings. Note that this will erase the data from your device.

Take a look this Apple Support article: Use iTunes to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support.

As a final step, try the recovery mode. Turn your device off, then plug it to your computer with the home button pressed. Keep the Home button pressed until you see the iTunes logo on the screen of your device. After that on your computer you should see the iTunes window saying your device needs to be restored to factory settings. Click on the restore button.
