You posted this in the MacBook Air forum which suggests a newer computer but your profile at the bottom of your post says you are running Tiger OS which is quite old. The method you use will depend upon the OSX version.

There is also a firmware password which is a more advanced feature and I expect if you had one you would not be asking this kind of question here.
