Last night (or just after midnight) I plugged in my recently purchased iPad for yet another software update (that I really didn't need) and woke up this morning with a dark screen.  Unable to power on...I've tried everything.... what to do??  Thanks.  On the support screen, the suggestion is ship to manufacturer!!!!  What???

First an original iPad 1 cannot be updated past iOS 5.1.1.

So, if this is what version of iOS was on your iPad, that is as far as it will go.

Second plug in the cable and charger, connect up the iPad, and then try a hard reset of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons

simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons.

    Good Luck!
