Depends on what it is.

You should always make an appointment, as they may not be able to help you without one - depending on how busy they are.

In general tehy do not repair iPhones, they replace them. There are exceptions.

Without knowing what you want them to "fix", it is difficult to help any more.

It's something I could do at home for free, but it's not working here so if I go to the apple store, I want to know if they can do it for free.

Better to make an appointment with the Genius Bar otherwise you'll be waiting.

As far as for free, I can't answer that as we don't work for Apple, they'll tell whether or not it will be free when you take it in.

As far as whether they will fix something for free, it depends on what you are referring to, and stating it is something you could do at home makes the issue even more difficult to answer. Diagnosis of your device is done at no cost, but depending on the problem, it could involve a cost. You need to indicate what needs to be done.

How about taking the time to ask your question, describe your problem, and people could probably do a better job at answering your question.
