Q: bootcamp partition renamed untitled after booting in MacOS

Can anybody please help me ?

I had succesfully installed Windows 10 on my Macbook Pro and ran Windows already several weeks smoothly.

Unfortunately I did not make a backup of my windows files yet.

Today when I booted to El Capitan to connect my iPad to iTunes Windows gave me a message that it needed repair when I tried to reboot to the bootcamp Windows version.

It did not succeed in repairing and only gave my an advanced options menu.

I booted back into MacOS to find that the windows partition was renamed to 'Untitled' and that no files were visible in Finder.

I than ran Disk Utility and selected First Aid on this partition, I thought this was read only to check for disk errors.

Now when booting from Windows it says no operation system available and Disk Utility shows 496 GB empty space on this partition !

I hope not all my files are lost !!

What can I do to repair the bootcamp partition ? I tried to install setup bootcamp files on USB but cannot boot from USB (does not show the USB drive)

thank you !

Please test with 0C, and change it to the second set of values from Testdisk, verify the MBR and test. We know your old W10 installation boots, but you are missing files.

so I repeat second step gdisk with 0C

what do you mean by change it to second set of values from testdisk ?  with the first part of gdisk ?

then overrule MBR with fdisk step with 0C ?

can you give more detail ? i am novice.... thank you

You have two possible GPT4 entries starts and 2 sizes, so four combinations.

I suggest using both starts and trying Size 1, and then using the same starts, using the second set of sizes. and testing the various resulting GPT4 entries.

thank you very much for the table...

    I see 3 entries ?

So I suppose I first create a GPT with the first gdisk step using start B1 and then +(size D1) or (end C1) and then use second GPT step gdisk to recreate the MBR.... Then use fdisk to override MBR with 0B or 0C ?

I have found a lot of my files via EaseUS Data Recovery wizzard. Very useful program.

My PST files are recovered as well as my images.

I think I will stick to macOS !

Is there a way I can reclaim the space bootcamp took for Windows and attribute it to the OS X partition ?

    thank you

Do you have a Time Machine backup of OSX?

no, I never used the OS X

now i've installed and customized the OS X that I'm running from the USB drive and I'm liking it very much.

I suppose I have to do the customizing all over again ?

You will need to backup OSX via Time Machine, and erase/restore the OSX which will reallocate all disk space to OSX.

when I backup OSX from the USB drive with Time Machine and then boot in recovery mode and restore the internal harddrive with this image will it be OK ?

Or will all the paths be pointing to the USB drive ?

If you want to reclaim old disk space, you will need to erase the entire internal disk and then restore the backup. The restored OSX will occupy the entire disk and will not have any pointers back to the USB.
