the older appletv's then 4 have the apps that are build into the firmware and will never have others

your only option is to airplay mirror if your appletv is the newer black ones the old alu ones will not airplay mirror

Use AirPlay to wirelessly stream content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

I have a generation 3. I tried to mirror, but it won't mirror the content. It just shows the IPad screen instead of the movie that I am playing. I can hear the movie, but I can't see it.

Lame. Once again Apple wants me to jettison a perfectly good product so I can have the latest one instead of updating one I already have purchased 2 previous versions of.

And yes, I can mirror the content from an iPad or iPhone but since I own a perfectly good Apple TV (just not the latest one) it would be nice to use it as it is intended to be used.

Just to clarify, the channels in older units are not in firmware, they are software. Both the 2nd and 3rd gen TVs have had channels added and updated over their lifetimes. They just don't have an app store to choose which ones show and which don't. Now if the channel selection will continue to be updated is something we'll have to see.

It would be nice if they would update the channel selection. We have the HBO and Showtime stand alone. It would be nice to have the new Starz and not have to upgrade to the 4th gen to get it.

I work as a software developer and would like to hear if what you see as the clear definition of what when something is firmware and when something is software on a non user adding software product such as the earlier appletv models ?

I, too, am hoping that Apple will make the Starz App available on the older models. You mentioned that you can't control/choose what you see or don't see.  You cannot choose apps from the App Store but you can prevent apps from displaying on the older models if you don't want to see or use them. Go to settings, main menu where you will see a listing of all the available apps. You can choose to show or hide each one.
