Q: Why is El Captain Os X download failing?

I am running:
OS X El Capitan

Version 10.11.4

on a:

MacBook Air (13-inch, mid 2012)

Processor 1.8 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Startup Disk Macintosh HD

Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB

I have tried 3 times to download OSX El Capitan so I can make a bootable USB for fresh install and each time the download gets some where around 5 to 6 GB the download errors and shows a message stating Download Failed Please try again from the purchase page the App Store App.

This is how I have been trying to download it, Ive tried by searching OSX and from the link in purchases page.

Still no luck, just wasting my downloads for the month Grrr.

I tried using the "First Aid" in the OSX Utilities and I also installed ONYX maintenance software hoping it might fix a bug and still same issue. "Can't Download OSX El Capitan!!!

Please help if you can?

    Hi Drivenbyjc,

I understand you want to make a bootable installer for OS X El Capitan on a USB drive.   The resource below explains how to do that.  Download the El Capitan installer program directly from the Mac App Store, not from your purchases.

Create a bootable installer for OS X

    Take care,

    Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

    Hi Drivenbyjc,

Thanks for your update.  My initial concern was where you were getting the El Capitan installer file from.  But since you indicated you followed the instructions in the resource I provided, then the next step is to try the New User Account as Eric explains.  Let us know what happens when you follow Eric's excellent advice.

    Take care,
