MacBook Pro mid-2012 nvram reset brings up OS X utility

I've started to have an issue with my thunderbolt screen not waking up and want to reset nvram to see if it helps. I shutdown, and immediately after startup sound depress CMD, option, P and R keys together and continue holding them, after a minute or so this brings me to the OS X utility screen? Has the process to rest nvram changed?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Resetting NVRAM

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R.
  3. Turn on your Mac.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys immediately after you hear the startup sound.
  5. Hold these keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for a second time.
  6. Release the keys.
